The cool thing about this model is that someone took the SP-100? firmware and hacked it to work with the SP-90, which is supposedly non-upgradeable.

Yeah I heard something like that too... here's a post I saw under CNET's user opinions:

got tired of those silly dancing men on the LCD screen, so I decided to open my up my sp-90 and put some black electrical tape over part of LCD to hide those little boogers. well, I removed the screws and pulled out the ciruit board and guess what I discovered. Printed on the Board was "IMP-100". Not only is the SP-90 firmware upgradable, but it actually is a "100". go figure!

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by hacking the firmware, could you elaborate a bit?

He means - go to yahoo group "riovolt" and download a copy of firmware for sp-90 (which is an already hacked version of sp-100- new filename, and hex hack) than burn it to CDRW and put into you sp-90, press "play" it will flash "Upgrading" and then display version 2.1 instead of version 1 of firmware - this one wil support playlists and wil even have the lighting option which is available for sp-100, however this won't work, since sp-90 lacks a backlighting diod.

The price went up to $79.95 (before rebate)

I see ~9$ shipping and ~5$ handling. Still sweet, but no longer 55$ after rebate...

true... but look at the price... its not like plunking down 200 bucks on the sp250 model... minimal risk

I have this and it's a good player, i'll have to look into upgrading the firmware on it.
