Can anyone give input on a decent DVD player that's near the bottom of the price range? I've seen them for as low as $68 for an Apex AD-1000 at half.com. Is this a good player? I don't want crap, but am definitely on a budget. Would it be better to spend $100 (my max) on a Toshiba or Panasonic? Would I be getting a better product? Thanks.

Any dvd player is better than no dvd player, go for it. At that price the features are probably limited, but from what I've read about Apex players is they work just fine.

I agree with the post above. Since you call yourself a "very newbie," I'm gonna say that the Apex should be more than enough. As crappy as a DVD player may be, it's an astronomical improvement from the VCR, so no matter what you get you're gonna be amazed at the picture quality. Just make sure you stick with it and don't do too much comparison shopping. It's after you get a taste of the better stuff that you start seeing all the minute differences in quality. In a way I think it's good to start out with something like a $70 Apex player, cause when you finally upgrade in the future, you'll appreciate it more.
