Another Cox Cable question...

I'm thinking about getting Cox cable service since DSL is not available. Unfortunately I hated them from the Cable TV service side and switched to DirectTV so I cant get the bundled package grrr... but that's beside the point.

The problem is I don't have a cable outlet in my den where my computer is. So has anyone had them install an extra outlet? I don't know whats involved with this but I don't want them tearing up my house.

If not, are there any products that would allow a wireless connection between the cable modem and my computer?

Well if worse comes to worse I'll move my computer/desk into the Master Bedroom, but that's a less desirable option.

If you don't mind spending a little money, you could
pick up a router/wireless access point (like the SMC7004AWBR or the Linksys BEFW11S4), and put the cable modem and router in your living room.

If you then put a wireless network card in your pc, you should be able to move it just about anywhere in your house, and not have to string CAT5 or coax all over the place.

It wouldn't be the cheapest way to do it, but it would definately be the most elegant...

BTW, I think I will go with alienware for my PC, I'm did read some GeForce4 reviews and as soon as they start offering it I'm gonna get one.

Those are Amazon links, obviously... and may not be the best prices you can find. You may find other info on them at other places as well... these links were just quick to find. Also, these are only two of quite a few of these type of product that's available, so you may want to do a little research and consider other brands/models as well.

Along with one of the wireless routers like the above, you'll need to pick up a wireless network card for your pc to go with it. Those generally run from $99-$150 each too.

All this stuff is using the 802.11B standard. And theoretically, different brands should work together, so you don't have to get a complete set of one brand. Might make it easier for support purposes, though, if you did, just in case you have problems. That way they can't pass the buck and blame the other equipment.

Should be interesting. I'm going to be doing exactly the same thing you are, moving my pc to a den with no cable connection, here in the next few months as well. So I'll be picking the same kind of setup up... but I haven't decided what I'll be buying yet.

The Alienware should be a nice system. One of my co-workers bought one from them about 6 months ago, and he's been really pleased with it...

Thanks for your advice, but it turned out the Cox guy just drilled a hole in my wall and wired a new outlet. So I can still keep my computer in my den - whoo hoo!

Just got my new cable modem yesterday - I'm just upset that I didn't do it sooner! This thing ROCKS!

man you are lucky. I left the cable guy in my basement for at most 5 minutes to drill for a new cable jack, and when i came down, he decided to drill a hole straight through the wall ... without thinking that maybe basements have concrete foundations. Anyway, when his drill bit broke it tore up the wall quite badly. He packed up his stuff, told me he was going to the hardware store to get some patching materials, and never came back :)
