DV camcorder as webcam?

I have a Mini DV Camcorder hooked up to a 1394/firewire and I was curious if anyone knows of software that would allow it to be used as a webcam? I have never used a webcam before and thought this might work. I tried using Microsoft Messenger, no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Just out of curiosity I gave this a try a while ago - I have a JVC that was connected through firewire but I couldn't get it to work (as a webcam). I tried it w/Yahoo messenger, but not with anything else yet. Let mw know if you figure it out.

OK, after doing some research it looks as though only MS Messenger can be used by the firewire. You have to install this

UPDATE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310507&id=310507&SD=MSKB)

in order to get it to work. I have a feeling this setup will become more prevelant as 1394 becomes more widely accepted. This is all I have found so far. Anyone else had any luck?

I forgot to mention that the 1394 card must be OHCI compliant. Check out this page

this is a question i ws thinking about asking as well...but i have no firewire card yet. i've been using the s-video in on my all in wonder and it's been working...

not a very elegant solution, but it works.

I have tried the messenger solution, and it seems to be working. Unfortunately, none of my friends on messenger have machines capable of receiving the signal so I am not positive it works. I originally wanted to set up the webcam for Yahoo but it doesn't seem that they support it.

Found out that it only works on XP machines for video conferencing. At least a step in the right direction.
