View Full Version : Hooking WAP up to Router
Ok. So I currently have the SMC 7004ABR router. This is not the wireless version. My plan is to maybe get a WAP so I can go around my condo with my laptop without any cables. The problem is that I have disable DHCP on the router so that I may use port forwarding and all that good stuff. So if I plugged in the WAP to one of the ports in the router, would the WAP only have 1 assigned IP address going to it? Would I have to re-enable DHCP for the setup to work?

I have this router... the router allows crossover or regular in on the 100 ports. For this wireless solution, it can accept DHCP or standard (the wireless solution from SMC) I am not sure what is wrong with the dhcp tho; as long as you know your dhcp ip # (run>cmd>ipconfig) then just forward to that #. Even the ststus on the routers web dialog will tell you this. Remember to set the dhcp lease expire to infinite and the ip #s wont change.

I would first plug your laptop into the WAP without it being connected phyicslly to any other network devices. Then connect to it remotely via browser or telnet, and change its ip to a static on on your network. If you let it have a dynamically assigned address the WAP should fine as well.
The way I would set this up would be to just let the WAP get assigned an address via DHCP.

I just did the same thing. SMC router, ORINOCO access point. Keep NAT and DHCP on the router and turn it off on the access point so that the WAP is just a bridge. Works perfect. The access point gets assigned an IP (at least mine did via DHCP on the router) and then the laptop gets assigned its own IP(also assigned via the router) Hope this helps.
BTW, the ORINOCO gold pc card and WAP are bundled at the gateway accessory store for $200. Free shipping too. Read the reviews at www.practicallynetworked.com
I like it alot...good range and throughput. Email me if you get it and I will help you with some of the setup..kind of a pain sometimes.
