I was just thinking about this today, who have you met in real life that's famous or whatever?

So I take my dog to the park every morning to play fetch, there's usually a lot of people there. And turns out one of the guys with his dog is the offensive coordinator for the AZ Cardinals (not really qualifies as famous, but if your a sports nut like me its very cool). Nice guy, petted and played with my pup a bit. (And no, I did not ask him why Plummer throws so many interceptions!)

I've also met:

- The short guy "Vinny" from Doogie Howser in a bar in Santa Monica
- Some dude from "Days of our Lives" in a bar in Chicago
- One of the VP's of Motown records on a flight from Chicago - cool guy, we bought each other Jack's and Cokes in the airport bar on a layover.

*hmmm* not to exciting, I'm sure you folks in SoCal have some better stories.

But the best story is that a buddy of mine and his wife got to meet former President Reagan a few years ago (before the Alzheimers set in). They had just had a new baby and the "prez" was asking to hold the baby and fawning all over her. They have a picture of it and everything. That was very cool.

-Scott Adams (Dilbert cartoonist) at a book signing
-Emeril Lagasse (Bam!) at a book signing
-Dizzy Gillespie - twice, and I even shook the man's hand
-Carl Sagan at a lecture at my college in 1989
-A lady who sang in a band with my cousin in the early 90's was on tour with Meatloaf as a backup singer
-Heather Avery Clyde, who plays some occasional character on Dawson's Creek (I don't follow the show, and I can't remember the character). Our families were friends while we were growing up. My parents went to her wedding and her parents came to mine. My mom and sister are going to her brother's wedding next week.

Heh, I was a student govenment assistent in college 'round that time too. They were in negotiations with Hunter S. Thompson (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) to get him to speak, and I got to see his list of demands. He wanted 1/2 a club sandwich and a fifth of chivas, I believe, to come and speak to us. So since the student government coudln't authorize the purchase of alcohol, we couldn't meet his demands. :P

George Foreman lived in my hometown of Kingwood, TX. His daughter went to school with me in 6th grade or 7th grade I believe. Saw him from time to time picking his daughter up and at open house night.

This next one's funny...I used to work for an aircrafts parts company and our biggest customer was the Mexican government. I was hired to do web design and presentations but somehow I got turned into the company bitch (there were only 3 people working in the entier company, the owner, the secretary and I). Well, the Mexican president's plane needed a new onboard computer, I forget what they're called. We ordered the piece and I had to drive it to the airport hangar and ship it. So, the president of Mexico's life on his airplane was in the hands of a 16 year old driving one REALLY REALLY REALLY expensive piece of equipment to the airport. I tried not to hit TOO many potholes :P.

Oh ya, the Fortune 500 meeting was held on campus here at UT last year. I had to dodge 382043 police on the way to class.

Also, they filmed a new Kevin Spacey movie here last semester. Kevin Spacey was on campus for about a week. Saw him a few times.

Robert R McCammon and Neil Gaimen at book signings - Neil doesn't live that far from me, so I see him sometimes.
Gerald Ford.
Chris Carter of the Vikings, at a Red Lobster.
I passed Kirby Pucket on the highway.
David Cassidy at the mall of america.

Speaking of the mall, my friends were at the sports bar there. One of them was really hot and sweaty, and bumped into someone, whom he thought was a friend. He joking wiped his brow on the guys shirt, then looked up...and up....and up, and realized he had just wiped his brow on Shaq's shirt.

My wife was once called in to do an adjustment on Marylin Manson, but sent her boss to him instead.

Hmmm - lets see:

Charles Barkley - belonged to the same club as we did, he saw me playing basketball and kind of laughed at my style, so he came out on the court and showed me how to shoot for about 20 minutes. Also took a jacuzzi with the man. (there was a jacuzzi in the club which everyone used)

Pete Rose - met him a few times, first couple times he was never willing to sign an autograph, then after his suspension for gambling he finally signed something

Mike Schmidt - met him twice, would sign anything either

Donald Trump - at a book signing and also just at his hotel

Jim Courier

Pete Sampras

Teddy Pendegrast - went to school with his son

Robert Seguso

Carling Basset- Seguso

Garry Maddux - went to school with his sons, his daughters went to school with my younger brother

Steve SPurrier - Enough said

Fritz Lang - Aggassi's coach

The Spinx brothers (boxing)- met them because friends with their nephew

Atienne Eigner (famous clothing designer, your wife or girlfriend will know who this is) - Friends with her grandson for a while

Bunch of local tv celbs

I know there are more but I cant think of them now.

I was the camp counselor for Steve Mariucci's (coach of the San Fran 49ers) son Tyler at summer camp, back when Mariucci was the QB coach for the Packers.

Met a bunch of GB Packers players when I worked at Best Buy in Green bay when I was in college... Most were pretty cool. A few were not.

Nothing stranger than having a guy who makes millions of dollars a year try to get you to knock $5 off the price of an open box cordless phone for him (Sean Jones).

Was about 20 feet away from Paul Newman throwing a fit in the pits at Elkhart Lake race track after someone pushed him off the race track on the pace lap. What a temper. :)

I saw Eminem at the Hard Rock as well. I've met Dr. Dre before since he was one of my clients. Also met Pamela Anderson, Tommy Lee, Joey Lawrence, John Singleton, and the members of 3T. Well it happend when they were still filming the "Wonder Years"

the main studio was @ the end of my parents street in Culver City, his little brother ( so yeah I met him too ) and his friends were playing some b-ball with me and my friends ( on the hoop set up by the studios in the parking lot ) and he came out and was talking shet because we were using "his" court, I said we are playing with your bro and he is cool with it. well he ran in and got security, they made us leave ( his little bro was mad because it was a good game ) well I went up to him and said something and was all in is face, well he just pussed out and ran in...

so like a week later I saw him @ school ( they always used my school for the school shoots ) and said "Hey wanna play hoops" he turned in surprise, and just kept going...

hmmm, Dryden Mitchell and the rest of the guys from Alien Ant Farm. Ate with Blink 182 @ McDonalds (We were both goin to the same, place too...a Blink 182 concert, what a coincidence!), but they wouldn't give me a backstage pass. :( I've also met Less than Jake. Rick Neuheisel is pretty good friends with my dad, so is Jim Lambright, so I've met them. My soon to be guitar instructor made all the guitars and amps on Oasis's last tour. Met Pressure 4-5 and got an autographed set list from them at a concert, which just happened to be with Alien Ant Farm, so I got to meet them, again. Funny thing is... They remembered me from the time 3 months before! How cool is that?

I used to work in radio, so I got to meet quite a few "celebrities". Most of it was just a handshake and a 30-second conversation. People like:

Motley Crue, KISS (including the now-dead guy), Kip Winger (he was cool at the time), The Beach Boys, Richard Marx, Michael Bolton, David Cassidy, Michael Penn, Prince, Jars of Clay, Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, New Kids On The Block (ok, it took guts to admit that...)

I do have a couple good stories, but this one is the best:

In 1990, Adam Ant was trying to make a "comeback", had a new CD out and was going to be performing in Minneapolis at a small club. A friend was the artist rep for MCA Records (Adam Ant's record label), so she invited me to have dinner with her and Adam and go to the club.

I met them at a really fancy restaurant. He was very polite and well mannered, not at all what I expected. He seemed like the stereotypical "English Gentleman". We talked about music, his dogs, politics and stuff like that. He was constantly checking his watch and looking at the door. I finally asked what he was waiting for. He said the airline had lost a piece of his luggage, the case that contained his stage clothes. He was waiting for them to deliver it to the hotel.

After dinner we rode in the limo to the club. By this time Adam was really getting bugged. It was very hard for him to keep up with the conversation, since he was so nervous about his luggage.

At the club we were just hanging out and having fun, when my friend (the record rep) runs up to me crying. She says she needs us to come and talk to Adam, because he's really freaking out and she can't control him. We get to the backstage area and we find him laying under a bench in the fetal position in kind of a catatonic state. Luckily, the airline dropped off his luggage minutes later. The dude changed, and it was like he was a totally different person in his stage clothes. He went on stage and put on a great show.

I have another story about Rosanne Arnold staring at my butt on her honeymoon, but I've wasted enough time at work, so maybe I'll put it up later.

mmmm....
my brushes with fame...
the movie North was filmed in my town, and so, a few friends and I got to yell out Elijah's name (Elijah Wood) as he ignored us and walked on.
The movie Wonder Boys was filmed in my college...
Didn't really get to meet anyone, but saw Michael Douglass passing by in a car, and Robert Downey Jr. was somewhere around there...
Friend saw Ralph Nader speak at my school.
Saw Al Gore when he was at my school.
Yelled out and got responses from Pat Mahomes, Todd Pratt, and Rickey Henderson a few years back at a Mets-Pirates game.
mmmmmm
cousin waved at Dave Winfield on the highway and he waved back...
My dad met LL Cool J, Ozzie Smith, and a whole bunch of rappers during the late 80's and early 90's.

hmmm.....mine aren't that cool....
i've shaken hands with President Clinton and Presidential Candidate John McCain.
i met House Speaker Newt Gingrich (back when he still had some power and respect) and Steve Forbes when they did fundraisers for campaigns i was working on.
i twice ate at a japanese restaurant with West Virginia gov. Bob Wise (if you are ever forced to go to charleston, wv, check out Fuji's. it's about the best ethnic restaurant in the state, i think).
i saw Gerald Ford speak.
working in politics for a few years, i met a variety of other poltical figures, most of whom none of you (or i) care about.
other than that, i haven't met any cool famous people.

[edit]some i totally forgot:
in eighth grade, i went to school with a bunch of Magic Johnson's nieces and nephews
i saw ralph nader speak during the 2000 presidential campaign
i met and had lunch with (on different occasions) john judas (contributing editor at The New Republic) and sociologist Alan Wolfe (wrote the somewhat well-known book One Nation, After All).
i also had lunch with the head of the St. Louis branch of the Federal Reserve Bank. however, he made such an impact on my life that I don't even remember his name :D

hmm...as for me, i don't recall meeting many celebrities. maybe it's cuz i don't care about them much.

but that one girl from "That 70's Show," the short loud one w/ the dark brown hair, is my high school friend's little sister. yeah...she always seemed to be a bit loud and outspoken whenever we saw her at my friend's house in high school. but i figured that's how all child actors acted...:heh:

a funny twist is that my sister was in the same 6th grade class with her and she(my sis) wanted to beat the crap out of her. i thought that was hilarious. but one thing that WASN'T funny was when i saw her on the cover of "Stuff" magazine. that kinda grossed me out...not her per se, but to see her on that kind of magazine. oh well.

I was once waiting to board a plane in Boston. The first person that got off the plane when it arrived (obviously sitting in first class) was Hulk Hogan - he was BIG (muscular).

-My grandpa created seeless & yellow flesh watermelons, those little pear-shaped red and yellow tomatoes, and a bunch of other stuff. He's also best buds with Taiwan's former president.

Wow Dopey!

You and I have another thing in common - I once got into a HUGE argument with Fred Savage! He is such a little b***h! He started going off on a friend of mine because she wasn't interested in him and he was shocked because he was Fred Savage! I just started railing into him about his washed up has-been career and how South Park had him pegged and he got really defensive  . I then asked him if he thought about actually doing anything with his life or was he just a complete waste of skin - he got really pissed at that and his friend started "holding him back" to make him look good as he left. I still laugh about that sometimes...

As for other famous people I have met/worked with:

Sinbad (really cool - worked on his home network with a collegue)

Burt Ward (Robin from the old "batman" series - worked on his home network with a collegue - kind of a freak)

Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman - worked on his home network - also a major freak)

Bob Denver (Skipper's little buddy! He was a total vierdo)

Jimmie Kimmel (I was almost on Win Ben Stein's Money and he was there at the tryouts - I got removed because the company I worked for at the time did a bunch of networking work for Time Warner and Comedy Central - damn lawyers!)

"Iron Eyes" Cody (The Crying Indian from the don't litter commercials - guy was amazing - everyone would stop what they were doing every time he spoke - he garnered that much respect from everyone I was with at a First Nations Intertribal Council Meeting)

Forrest Whitaker (met him on the Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade)

Paula Abdul (I worked on a network for Groove Track Productions on 3rd Street Promenade and her then husband was the president of company and a total choad - I briefly met her when she came in to see him and we were talking with him in his office)

Larry Flynt (my company redid his building's entire cabling infrastructure and network - I had to speak to him on several occasions)

3 Playboy Playmates (Lisa Marie Scott, Gillian Bonner and Nadine Chanz)

Jerry Seinfeld (I was on the CBS Studios lot in Studio City where Seinfeld was made and I was inspecting the whole site for a new fiber optic network I was designing for there. I had to look at each of the studio offices and he was in the Seinfeld office)

John Lithgow (same as Seinfeld but swap 3rd Rock from the Sun in for Seinfeld and you get the picture. I met the blonde on the show too but I can't remeber her name. Really cool guy - smart too because he asked me a bunch of questions about the fiber network I was designing/proposing to the studio)

David Kelley (Of David Kelley Productions - The Practice & Ally McBeal - really smart guy but really dumb about computers - we were short on support staff one day so I had to go and fix his printer by printing in huge letters, "The Printer Works Fine Mr. Kelley" ugh... operator error....)

Fred Rogers (He came to my University to speak and I got to meet him afterwards - I swear a light bulb turning on makes him happy)

Arnold Schwarzenegger (He was making a movie at my University and I watched him do a handstand and start doing "pushups" - he later came out and met some of the people that were standing around to watch)

Scott Bakula (They did a Quantum Leap episode at my Unviersity and I got to meet him and Dean Stockwell - they were filming on my then girlfriend's floor at her residnece hall)

Carl Sagan (Came to speak at my IEEE Communications Society meeting about the Pluto Express mission and how they needed communications engineer's help assistance in the communications package)

Buzz Aldrin & 6 other astronauts (They have all come to speak at my IEEE Communications Society meetings)

Chuck Yeager (He lives in Grass Valley near where I grew up and we went to the same barber to get our hair cut - I met him many times there)

Molly Ringwald (she grew up in Sacramento and I met her through some friends when I was in high school - I met her before pretty and pink and she was nice - I saw her again after 16 candles and she was a total b***h)

Ronald Reagan (I "met" him when I did some networking work at the Alzheimer's Foundation that he was the head of - his memory was getting pretty bad at that time)

Jerry Brown (currently mayor of Oakland, CA, former Governor of California and perennial presidential candidate - I met him several times when he has spoken at my University)

Jimmie Carter (I met him at LAX once)

Adam Sandler (met him at a comedy club - he was standing in the back and I accidentally bumped into him when I was trying to avoid a waitress with a full plate of drinks. He was pretty full of himself)

Drew Carey (met him outside a comedy club in Hollywood about 7 years ago before he made it big - really cool guy)

Jay Leno (met him at a Comedy club in Hermosa Beach - he likes to get in and talk with the crowd sometimes)

I once met the then-Taoiseach of Ireland (prime minister) at an pub no less.

I also met Colm Meaney (Chief O'Brien in Star Trek:TNG and DS9 - I also met him at a pub - really cool guy)

I know I'm forgetting a bunch of others but it's pretty easy to go around in L.A. and see celebs. I just happened to work 5 years for a company that had a really good reputation with the entertainment industry. It's kind of funny how people get all excited when you say, "yeah I met him..." but it's just like another daily occurrence to people around here. You can get really immune to the whole "Look! That's..."

Oh one last thing - when I worked at the Getty Conservation Institute I worked in the environmental monitoring section and we did a whole slew of things for other museums because we had a boatload of cash to do research. Scientific American did a whole spread on GCI and what we did for museums and historical sites around the world - an environmental monitoring station I partially designed and built wound up in a full-color 1/4 page photo in the article. It was monitoring the Chaco Canyon archaeological site in New Mexico and needless to say I bought around 40 copies to save for posterity.

Tatiana Ali - Met her through a mutual friend (I met him at UCLA, she went to high school with him). Didn't get her autograph, b/c I spent the whole time trying to hook her up with my brother (darn it, I want nephews and nieces). She wasn't interested (had a BF). :(
Sylvester Stallone - My friend lives in Malibu also, near him. Darn, the guy wastes really cool canvases (can't paint worth crap), but who am I to complain... can't paint worth crap myself. :hmm:

About Pee Wee - when I and my collegue were there working on a couple of new servers for his office his staff told me about "the Vault". Apparently after the whole Florida adult theatre bust he went seriously undergound and built up this massive porn collection that he kept in a vault. Apparently according to his staff it wasn't your run-of-the-mill Chasey Lain or Jenna Jameson stuff - it was more on the extreme side. :nono: This is the same collection that was confiscated just recently during a "raid" at Pee Wee's playhouse.

Like I said - a serious freak. :2far:

Tonight, I had the honor of meeting Jack Kilby. In case you don't know (which is highly likely), Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit at Texas Instruments in 1958 and after a lifetime of work in that field, won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2000. Mr. Kilby gave a lecture at my university tonight, so I was able to actually shake his hand and have a few words with him. It's a shame that I didn't have a book or something else for him to sign; that would have made it even more special to me. :D

I forgot about Henry Winkler! I me him when I went to a taping for a 10-episode sitcom he did about 8 years ago. He came up to meet our group afterward and talk with us (I went with a friends class from Cal Poly Pomona) You know he really hates it now when people go, "AAYYYYY!!!" at him.

Geez Kevster, you've met everyone. Reminds me of that old joke about the "guy who knows everyone". Don't remember the joke but the punchline is he bets someone that he knows the pope. "Hey, who's the dude in the funny white hat standing next to Kevster?" :heh:

I haven't met everybody. I was just fortunate to have a job for 5 years that was always different. I was always having to go to different customer sites for either network design consultation or doing network analysis/installation/configuration. I did a lot of work in the entertainment industry and the funny thing about "the Industry" is that once you build a reputation you get referrals from everywhere. When that happens it is very easy to start meeting people involved in entertainment.

Some of the places I have worked at: different film/TV studios, a ton of post-production houses, different TV/Movie production offices, digital editing studios, TV stations (KCOP, KTLA, KABC), CNN, Hanna Barbera, Turner Broadcasting, CNN in LA, military bases (North Island NAS, South Island Amphib base where the SEALs train, Miramar NAS and Hanford/Lemoore NAS), all of the Pepsi and some of the Coca Cola bottling/distribution facilities in So. Cal, the Miller and Anheiser Busch Breweries in So. Cal, the Union Oil fields near Bakersfield and along the California coast, UCLA, a bunch of community colleges in the LA area and LAX.

Working at Larry Flynt Publishing was a lot of fun :P - he has like 80 different magazines (about 30 of them are nasty and others are "normal"). His personal suites on the top floor of his building are very impressive. The fact that my company did LFP gave us a lot of referrals to other adult entertainment companies (mainly the ones that do all of the digital photo editing for the different magazines - it requires a lot of network throughput). It was kind of weird through because they would have the magazine's photos for the month all spread out on the wall in different areas and you got used to seeing those kinds of photos - to the point you really didn't them notice anymore.

I worked in a lot of interesting places doing network engineering but it did have its drawbacks like constant travel (I put 50k miles on my car in less than 2 years) and the fact that the company I worked for wouldn't pay me what I was worth. The job I have now pays me nicely  and the other nice thing is I'm not constantly driving in LA traffic anymore. :D

NKOTB - We went on a class field trip to Magic Mountain on the same day that they were visiting. Saw Joe & Jon at the Log Jammer ride, a few logs ahead of us.

J.T. Snow - Met & got his autograph after a game. :love2: Orlando Palmeiro also offered me a kiss during that game.

Steve Garvey & Ron Cey - Garvey was the announcer at a Cal baseball game. Cey was there to watch his son, Dan, play. Got pics taken with both.

I saw some European soap opera star while changing planes at London Heathrow.

Lowell Bergman (of "The Insider" fame) and Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta spoke at my graduation ceremonies.

Most importantly, I met Nija, who met Kevster, so I'm almost famous, by association! :P

For one week each summer, I work as the media coordinator for a big Christian music festival (http://www.sonshinefestival.com/). I'm sort of like the liaison between bands and radio stations.

i just remembered...

i know Buddy Holly's brother. Hes a friend of our's / the family's.

Me and my parents used to go to church where Buddy did. I think he wasnt there at the time, but is wasnt to far after he left.

Larry Holly (the brother) gave me a violin if i promised i would learn to play it. He's got all his brothers platinum records on his walls in his house and stuff - it was really awesome. Probably something not to many people have seen in this generation.

Whats REALLY FREEKY, is the only place i've ever hear his songs on air were on a station in colorado. Freaked me out the first time i heard them on air too... I was like WTH! I know that song!. Pretty cool.

Billy Oscay's dad used to make violins for a living (and other string instruments) before he drank himself to death. My grandma gave me an OOOOLD violin a while back, and she's not sure where it came from, but i think the guy made it. I want to get it appraised somewhere. Its definitely at least 60 years old.

I saw the King and Queen of Spain from about 20' off one time in a parade. Pretty cool.

in addition to my list...

once i was playing at a coffee house in chula vista (sd county) and met a guy that claimed to be in "rosie and the originals." we played "angel baby" and he said he was impressed with our version.

for those that might be interested in this, i got this from www.allmusic.com

...they formed in San Diego in 1960. Unable to find a recording studio in San Diego, they cut "Angel Baby" in a barn-like building in the farming town of San Marcos, with a radically different B-side, "Give Me Love," with a vocal by Bluford D. Wade.

i remember being intrigued to hear that the cowboy junkies recorded the "trinity sessions" in an abandoned church with only 1 microphone. the album yielded "sweet jane." anyways...so here is this other band that did something similar...except like way long ago. good times.

A while back, I went with a group of friends to a video signing.
It was for "Dogma" starring Kevin Smith. He said he'd sign the video if you bought it at the store he was at and ONE other thing. The cool thing was he'd do it for extra people who were with you. So mainly I went for an extra 2 items to be signed. But instead, we went up and had him sign the videos... and guess who showed up. None other than Joy Mohr...
Hmm... according to their conversation.. look for a new movie from Kevin Smith based on Shaft... starring Joy Mohr (crosses fingers).
Oh, we got a great pic for my friend's ska-thic band.... called "Fingernails in my Armpit"... quite scary, indeed.

Very nice guy, don't remember his name but back then the globetrotters had a TV show and he was the guy that dressed up as a woman and did the woman's voice and stuff...

I remember he took us out on the playground and bounced-passed us the ball to make layups - I was one of only 2 kids that made it in the hoop. So I guess that's my claim to fame since I have about a 3" vertical leap right now...

I heckled Bill Clinton prior to the 1992 NY primary. He was giving a speech in front of Federal Hall and the NY Stock Exchange and I stood about 10 feet in front of him with a "Slick Willie" sign. After his speech he sought me out and we chatted for about three minutes...three very funny and long minutes. It was actually written-up in the NY Times. Funny thing is I'm a left-of-center Democrat and just couldn't stand the man. Felt he couldn't be trusted. Hummm, was I right???

I actually bumped into him outside of a restaurant a block from Wall St. last year but he didn't remember me. I'll bet he would have if I had my sign.

Oh, yeah, I also almost beat up Dennis Miller at the Improv in Los Angeles in 1990. I'm a huge fan of his comedy but he was a tiny, arrogant, affected, a-hole. I was immature and thought it would be funny. Senses got the best of me and I just called him a bad name.

something a little more recent:

i go to the same HS as Sasha Cohen. Shes that 17yr old who skated tonight in the olympics. I dunno if she won but as said on King of the hill, "where i come from peggy hill, you either come home a winner, or you not come home at all".:heh:

And i saw and got gary pettis' autograph when i was in a baskin robins a few years ago. He was there with his two kids.

Curtis Enis (chicago bears) owns a home like a block or two away from me... i dont know how often he stays there.. probably not often.

Tom Cruise built a huge mansion on a lake thats like a two min. drive from where i live. He never moved in though since he broke up with the girl before they could move in... this was a while ago.

My bio teacher last year played for the san diego padres.

When the little league team from my city went to mexico or china or wherever for the world series of the whole world, i knew some of the kids on the team... they were the top team of all the us ne ways.

my dad bought it at a charity auction. he sang the national anthem, i threw out the first pitch, and my sister was the honorary bat-girl that year.. in 2001, my dad sang, and i threw out the first pitch.

first time i went, i dont think my pitch made it to home plate. i was 13 at the time. last year, i actually pitched it to home plate, and in the strike zone :)
