I'm on a network right now, and I tried to load both Morpheus and Kazaa, but for some reason, it won't neither will connect. I know that there is a port specified for Morpheus, but I was wondering if the same is true for Kazaa (I suspect that it is).
Also, is there a way to "trick" the network so that Morpheus/Kazaa can connect?

hey ladoga,
i beleive that morpheus and kazaa are essentially the same thing, and run off of the same technology and code base. Find out more about your network (university network?). Our university is grouping all of the connections over the Morpheus/Kazaa port into one group, and limiting that bandwidth to something like 200kbits/ sec or something really small. and there are at least 12,000 kids on this network.
ask around, and you will probably find out whats blocked.
good luck

Well, I figured out what deal was...
Apparently (and it is a college--my old one), they've done something with packeting. They've grouped all the p2p connections (including FTPs :disa: ) into one group and have blocked all of them. The thing that you said your school has done with Morpheus/Kazaa these guys have done with games: there's only about 200 kb/s of bandwidth for about 2,000 people. Good news is, we can still run StarCraft!
Grrr, these guys are idiots. There are two T1 connections (3 if you count the library) for 2,000 people (only about 1,500 computers), and they've allocated 1/3 of the bandwidth for instant messanger programs. :2far:

My friends have experienced the same problem with P2P programs being blocked. What you might want to try is www.gnotella.com . Of all the ones that are out there, thats the only one my friends have been able to access from their dorms. Although I just tried installing it last night and connecting to no avail.. But hey, what do you got to lose?

Well, I tried your idea about Gnotella, and that doesn't work either. Oh well, it's not a big deal.

Haha, well, I'm only here for a week. The people that live here full-time will just have to learn to deal with it!!! :P

But still, its a waste of bandwith! When Napster was still around, I came out with a set of rules/guidelines for those people who have broadband, etc. I don't remember all of them but here they go.
1. If you don't have at least 3 computers hooked up to your broadband connection, you're putting it to waste!
2. If you aren't using all your bandwith, you're wasting it. 1 kb/s to spare is allowed, but anymore, you are putting bandwith to waste!
3. If you happen to be downloading from someone over P2P networks, etc., and you notice they have a very fast connection, be sure to queue up their entire library and leech like you've never leeched before! Doesn't matter if you don't listen to the music or watch the videos! Don't ask questions, just leech!
4. Do not share your files with strangers. =P Why should you suffer from a slowed connection while others get all your stuff? :)
5. If your computer says you have 1MB free, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR, fill it up!
6. If your computer hasn't started lagging from all the downloading and file transfers, you aren't putting it to its full potential! Now queue up another 1000 files, and drain that RAM of yours! Thats an order!
Exceptions to these rules are as follows:
1. Acts of God
2. You already filled up your hard drive, in which case, delete all the things you just downloaded, and start downloading again!, or get a new hard drive.
3. 56K modems and slower.
4. Power Outage. This is only a one time exception. Consider getting backup generators, so you don't waste those precious seconds, downloading everything!
5. Friends or family are using it to just surf the web, in which case, KICK 'EM OFF! Theres not a second to waste!
6. Acts of God
So how many of you fit those criteria? =)

I heard alot of users have set the p2p software to use port 80.
Since its mostly used for the web they really cant block it.
Just an idea. ;)
If it works for you post it. I'm curious.
