If I told you I'm walking 60 miles for 3 days to help women with undetected breast cancer find out early enough to survive, would you support me?
This year, approximately 182,800 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. That's 500 per day. More than 40,800 will die. 80% won't have any genetic predisposition to the disease.
More than almost any other serious disease, breast cancer touches nearly all of us, whether we're women or men, old or young. A woman's chance of having breast cancer during her lifetime is one in eight. Your chance of knowing this woman is almost 100%.
Avon and Palotta Team Works are doing something to fight breast cancer, and I'm joining them. From May 17-19, 2002 I will walk 60 miles from Fitchburg, MA to Boston. I'm doing this for my mother, who recently kicked breast cancer's butt, and for everyone out there who has been or will be touched by this disease.
All proceeds from the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day go to the Avon Crusade (http://www.avoncrusade.com). In order to participate in the walk, I must raise at least $1,900 but my goal is to raise at least $3,000.
I'm asking you to support me. If you aren't able to, perhaps you can pass this on to someone who may be able to. For more information on the walk, why I'm doing this, or how you can help, check out my webpage: http://www.stephaniespage.tk
Thank you!

Funds raised by the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Days support five key areas of the breast cancer cause: medical research into possible causes, prevention, treatment and cure of breast cancer; clinical care for breast cancer patients; financial assistance and support services for survivors, patients and their families; educational seminars; and community-based early detection programs across the country. There is a particular focus on reaching medically underserved women. The funds are deposited into a separate bank account established for each Avon 3-Day, and are disbursed as grants through the Avon Foundation to carefully selected breast cancer programs and academic research centers. The Foundation receives no fee for managing and disbursing the funds. Avon is committed to distributing the funds in a timely manner, and the tens of millions raised by each Avon 3-Day series are dispersed by the following year.
The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade is committed to ensuring that much of the funds raised are returned to the regions in which the Avon 3-Days take place. There are funded non-profit, community programs in every Avon 3-Day region. Additionally, the ten funded research centers are located in the areas of Avon 3-Day events. However, Avon is committed to ensuring that women are not excluded from breast health programs simply because they do not live near an Avon 3-Day event, and programs are supported nationwide.
There are currently 200 breast cancer researchers at 10 institutions supported by Avon funds, with more research awards slated for 2002.
Since 1993, Avon has funded more than 600 non-profit, community-based breast health programs across the U.S. to reach women, especially medically underserved women, with information about the importance of detecting breast cancer early and to refer them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their own communities. Every Avon-funded breast health program must guarantee diagnostic follow up and treatment for any woman with a suspicious mammogram or screening.

Ok, the pledge link is all fixed. :)
Thanks again, even if you only look at my page and don't pledge. I really want to make a difference, even if its just a small one.

As one standup comedian once said, "why can't these foundations just donate the money and not put thousands of people through ridiculous tasks. What will square dancing for 72 hours straight at the 3 Day Prostate Cancer Dance-a-Thon do to directly benefit the patients??" Actually I have no right to be complaining, cause I never really had the courage like theorangeone to participate in one of these events. I admire you theorangeone. I wish you luck.

Thanks.
:heh: I think they make people do stuff so that others will see a better reason to give money. I've actually seen events that raise money for breast cancer that will be a lot easier on my body, but I decided this was the best one for me. I'm actually really excited about the walk, and I've met great people so far, and I've heard so many inspiring stories.

Hey orange,
I heard the event company provides free personal training for people who want to walk but aren't in good enough shape. Now that's some good stuff.

They have coaches on staff that you can talk to, and places throughout the region that give discounts on training stuff- whether it be a personal trainer or a new pair of sneakers or a membership to a gym.
