hmm. . . I have a crackhead friend that has rigged a dss dish into a wifi. . . he claims that the thing is hot enough to pop corn.

Works really well for him. Not sure speeds or what not, but range is not a problem for him.

It is big in SF and other metro areas where they are trying to make WiFi access free to everyone...
