I don't know about the newer models...but DO NOT get a Mitsumi 4801 and under. It would seem that just about the ONLY program you can use is Prassi, the older version--which is pretty hard to find. Took me a WHOLE lotta coasters to figuret that one out. I hear TEAC and HPs are good.

i'm thinking about getting a CDR that's good for making PSX game backups and other stuffs..anyone know any good and not so expesive CDR around? Thanks.
Most of CDR will work just fine with PS games that are not copy-protected.
However, if you want to use CloneCD as your burning software, you should check to see http://www.welcome.to/cloneclinic
They have list of all the CDR which will be compatible with CloneCD.
I have Imation external scsi 8x20 CDR which is not compatible with CloneCD but I never had problems backing up PS games even the copy-protected games.
I do know that CloneCD can copy most of copy-protected PS games; however, I prefer to use ppf engine to break up the protection.
That way, you can add some more functions to the game such as PAL-NTSC selector and trainer.

This page should be very helpful for looking for software and maybe hardware. If you want to burn all kinds of stuff go with Yamaha or Plextor.

Hey, Get the Plextor SCSI series burners. They are the best around. I haven't run into ANY programs that didn't work for it.

Plextor has the best support for their drives, and their drive mechanisms are probably the most stable and reliable. If you want the best compatability though, I would perhaps choose a Yamaha. They set most of the book standards and hence their drives can read stuff like crazily scratched CDs and get around copy protection.
If you want to do audio, or already have a Plextor reader go with the Plextor burner as their software integration is the best.

plextor is the best.... never had problem...

Gamecopyworld.com has some links to pages that are devoted to copying PSX games. Check it out. (Oh how I wish I still had a modded PSX...)

Yamahas have always been nice to me (even when I feed it generics)...
Just go SCSI, IDE sucks if your planning to do anything on your comp while it burns (important if you burn a lot like me).

I tried CLONECD using my Yamaha IDE 2216.It did not work. However I used CDRWIN( Goldenhawk.com) and it worked.

I have an HP 8100i and it works fine for "backing up" playstation games. Just make sure to burn on a slower speed, that way there is no chance of errors, and you have to experiment with what type of cd's you use, different ones work better, well at least in my playstation. And you gotta get a mod chip, which is always nice. Except now a lot of the new games have mod chip detection, but to get around that you just need a gameshark, all the codes are all over the net.
Oh ya one more note, the software that I usually use is either Discjuggler or Nero. Nero is a good all around burning utility, it will even convert mp3's to wave for you, or you can just have winamp do it, but discjuggler seems to work best for duplicating cd's, especially psx.

Only go SCSI if you can afford it. It's not worth it going half ass. You have to buy a good card (ie an Adaptec, preferably 2940UW or higher), SCSI cabling (expensive stuff), and the drive itself will cost about $100 more over IDE. If you plan on burning a lot (ie more than 2 or 3 times a day initially) I would pop for the SCSI and charge your friends more hehe.
Adaptec Easy CD Deluxe 4.0 seems to work the best for MP3s as it has the easiest interface. For overburning and game CDs I still turn to Nero. I guess Prassi is best for PSX, but check out the page I listed for PSX. That guy has burned thousands of PSXs so he know what he's talking about. Even has links to get mod chips.

well, first off i want to address the mitsumi cd-r issue. mitsumi's are fine. there. next, to all those having problems burning psx games, there's a lot involved making a burn work. first, what modchip are you using? the new(er) 'stealth' modchip deals with the copy protection mechanism. next, your ps-x model. the older ps-x's had crappier lasers and were more finicky about the cd-r's you used. verbatim blues work the best, but after SCPH100x models read others fairly well. lastly, what software did you use? try blindread to dump the image and fireburner to make a cd. in fireburner, set the write mode to RAW. that's it! this is the most reliable set up in my opinion. and as aforementioned, mitsumi's are fine. both fireburner and blindread work in windows 98 and 2000, and they're relatively small programs so i suggest you guys get 'em for all your other burning needs. fireburner also supports disc-at-once which is quite nice =)

Actually, I have read around, and the Mitsumi's, lower models, doubt you can buy them anymore, are a POS. I have tried virtually EVERY cdr program( CDRwin, Fireburner, Adaptec, Nero, Wintogo, PSXCopy, etc ), and nearly NONE works. The problem seems to be with the audio encoded with the movies, which when burned produces a scratchy sound, making it unplayable by psx, but okay for PC( PSXplay, Bleem, etc.) The only games that I have tried that works with other programs are games that do not have audio encoded into the movies, such as Legend of Mana. But this is just MY experience, and from what I gather from other newsgroups about ONLY these models.
BTW, I have a Game Enhancer, which I feel is a good indication of quality CDs, because they don't readjust the laser, thus depending on the reflective quality.
I could build a nice little castle with all my coasters. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif
