Today I went to my local Circuit City (Lafayette, IN) and purchased the Sony CRX175A1 CDRW Drive (24x/10x/40x) for $89.99 + tax. A $30 mail in rebate was printed off, so my total cost was $64.49 after rebate. And to my surprise, this burner even supports overburn (unlike an older Sony drive I used to own)!

Yep, it's got buffer underrun protection. Works great so far in Nero!

Hi,
I too am in West Lafayette, IN. (Another Purdue student I assume)
I love Gotapex.com!
You should come by my room and see the BIG tv I got such a great deal on. =) I got the Lafayette Best Buy to pricematch an online store for my Toshiba 57" 57h81! BB price ($2999.99), I paid, (2,395.00) Not bad.
And this TV is the most amazing thing in the world. =)
Now that you have a good burner
and I have a GOD burner (Plextor 24x10x40... will burn anything)
We should get a game exchange going on.
(As in we should sell each other our old games *wink wink* =)
hehehe, for $0.00.)

i just bought this exact drive from Best Buy a few weeks ago, and have had nothing but problems. CDRwin is my burning rom of choice, and the latest version didn't even support it, till very recently, and even then if i dont remember to click the underrun protection, it coasters the cd. now, i've been having a problem where the drive stops responding, and i have to unplug the drive for it to work again, and this last time its done it, i havent' been able to get it to work again (i'm too bust to return it). i probably just have a defective drive, but if anyone gets this drive and sees even the first problem, dont hesitate to return it!

Drew,
Damn, I wish I had 2 g's laying around to spend on a TV! :) That's cool though, I've always wondered if there were any fellow GotApex-ers around here. Nice work on that Best Buy pricematch though; I didn't know they'd match an online price at all! I'll have to swing by and check out that beauty sometime.
Somebody said the Sony was a crappy burner...it's funny because the reason I went to CC to buy this thing to begin with is due to the fact that I was having tons o' trouble with the original drive which I purchased from Newegg.com. It was an OEM version (same model number) and after contacting Sony they told me they don't support OEM drives at all! So when I happened to be at Circuit City yesterday I saw the drive and figured I'd just "pass the baton" to CC, so to speak. ;) I must've had a defective unit cause the retail version works great.
Take it easy...

well believe it or not, i too am from Lafayette. i'm not a Purdue student though, i work at the TV station.
anyways, i went into that Circuit City for the first time the other day (i've only lived here a month) and it was the tiniest, funniest looking store i've ever seen. i was actually looking around for a SCSI card, but they had nothing of the sort.
yeah so i don't have much to say about that sony burner but i thought it was funny you were in that circuit city looking for deals.

Sickdogg,
Man, this place is just a Lafayette gathering place! :) So what TV station do you work for? WLFI I assume (being the only one in town, as far as I know)? Send me an email when you get a chance (
[email protected]), I've been trying to get a hold of somebody at the station to get some coverage on this event I'm running on campus...I'll have to email you with more details.
That Circuit City is pretty ghetto. But I suppose it's good that they're there to give Best Buy some competition. Makes for some good pricematching every now and again.
Back to the burner...yeah, the Sony software is probably crappy...it's still in the shrink wrap, so I couldn't tell ya for sure. Nero works great for me, though.
Well back to class...

B's Recorder Gold isn't crap software. Its very popular in Japan. Much better than Easy CD Creator.
Just curious what version of the drive you picked up. Early versions of the drive were made by Sony themselves and had that Power-Burn stuff. Later versions were rebadged Lite-On's (Smart-Burn). The early ones don't overburn but I've heard the Lite-On ones do.

All I know is that the box says "buffer underrun protection" and the buffer underrun checkbox is able to be selected in Nero.
