Important note for users of Windows XP (like me):
System Requirements: Pentium equivalent processor or higher, Windows 95/98/NT 4.0, 32MB of RAM, 70 MB of available Hard Disk Space, CD-ROM drive, Color monitor, Windows 98 for USB and Windows 95/98/NT 4.0 for Parallel.
Notice that neither Windows ME nor XP are supported. The scanner should work well with either operating system, however if you need Visioneer support, you won't be able to get it if you run ME or XP.
Just something to keep in mind.

Thanks to everyone on this thread! My scanner is set to arrive tomorrow, so I guess I'll be calling Amex tomorrow night. ;) Nothing like making $20 when buying a decent scanner!
This has got to be one of the best deals in recent memory...
can a AMEX Blue for students card get a refund for the difference?

I thought you couldn't PM with AMEX Blue through Staples because Staples has its own PM policy.
When I search for SKU: 437849 it says it cannot be found
ARGH
I wanted to pick up <Another> one of these for free

Well, that might've been good, cause knowing stupid rebate policy's, they may have not honored a second one for the same product.
I did the aks a live Customer Service rep for help deal
The guy came online
Said they are not offered on the internet but they had them in stock and I could call Staples direct and get one
Here is what he said
We have it in stock but it is on a one week delivery delay. To order though us please call us at 1-800-3STAPLE. I can check stores in your area if you would like.
I had him check my local store and they have them in stock
So give it a whirl

i picked this up last week with the 70 rebate......I've only played around with it for a couple nights now, but so far I have had no problems running it on XP. If I do encounter any, I'll post.
Word to your mother. It's Friday.
I'm using the xp drivers I posted earlier in this thread. They work just fine.

got of the phone with these staples bastards after trying to do a price match on this scanner. they are flipping out over there. apparently exec's are telling them to pull it...blah blah blah. anyway, she said that anyone who tries to PM to a price less than $80 will result in a forfeit of the $80 rebate. i dont see how this is legal, but she and her supervisor confirmed that staples is ready to do this seeing as STAPLES is the one providing the rebate....NOT visioneer. so DO NOT price match your purchase over the phone. i think doing it at the B/M's is fine cause they dont really trace that back to your order.....and of course AMEX is fine too. just a heads up.!

Called to place the order and the phone rep said that they are waiting for a decision from their corporate headquarters on wheather or not to honor the rebate.
I was going to buy the scanner and a $30 web cam that also had a $30 rebate (item #466442 if you're interested) and she said that the camera rebate would be no problem, but the scanner rebate MIGHT not be honored if I used the $20 coupon because the rebate says that it is not to be used with any other special offers. Didn't know a coupon was a special offer...
She also said that they were expecting a ruling from their HQ on this sometime tomorrow (Monday), but since this is a holiday I'm not going to hold them to it.
Bottom line, this phone rep made it sound like a real possibility that if you used a coupon your rebate is in jepoardy.

Have any of you had any luck with the pricematch thing? I ask because I've read the following on the Staples website reagrding their policy:
Available coupons and rebates will be deducted from the Staples price to come up with a net Staples price when calculating the price match. For example, if you buy an item from us for $100, and we offer a $20 rebate, the net price is $80. If the item is available from another company for $80 or more, there will be no price match. Another example would be if you buy an item from us for $159 and you have a $30 coupon the net price is $129. If the item is available from another company for $125, the price match will be for $4.40 (110% of the difference).
The way I read this, they would only give you some pricematch money if you found the unit below $20.
Still, I guess getting the scanner for $20 is pretty good.

Argh!!!!:mad: For the one trillionth time: DO NOT CALL AND ASK ABOUT THE REBATE I'd never encounter a problem with Staples rebate and coupon combination. They HAVE ALWAYS honored in the past. Calling them would only lead to policy changes.

BAM, just did it online....they pulled the sku # from their system, so just search for visioneer, and then click on the 8100 model thats $99.99.

or, just click here: linky (http://www.staples.com/Products/SpotLights/Visioneer/437849_01/Default.asp?)
maybe mysterx can post the link to the first message...and if anyone knows how to make it so apex gets money for it, then do so.

hey....its monday. anybody confirm that staples is going to honor the rebate if used in conjunction with the $20 coupon credit? just curious.

Way cool! Thanks. The key tidbit was the hint to search on visioneer rather than using the product code.

Well, jerk offs at another board (I won't mention) has officially killed the PM from Amex Blue. I'll bet there are scores of people actually telling Amex that I paid $99 for the scanner and using a $20 off coupon. It also comes with an $80 rebate too. Can you PM it for me?

If anyone thinks Best Buy is getting bad press from not honoring a pre-order deal for an item they don't even have yet, wait until Staples sees the firestorm that happens if they pull this rebate in such a chicken, pathetic way.
I hope we can get official word as to the rebate status quickly... of course, who knows what to think when you call Staples, you never get the same story twice.
AND WOULD THOSE IDIOTS CALLING STORES OFFERING INCREDIBLE DEALS TO "CONFIRM" STOP IT?!?! (this is NOT directed anyone at GotApex, more of a whine to the universe) Sheesh!!

I hear ya! The only reason I called the other day was because they pulled it off the web site and you had to call to order.
ME: Hi I wanna buy it & use coupon.
THEM: OK, but be advised...
In the end, I just bought it from the B&M. I ain't turning my nose up at a scanner for $20.

Does anyone know if we can call Staples to get the coupon charged back and how that affects the rebate? All of my invoices show the coupon; if I somehow got it charged back, how would I prove in the rebate submission there is no longer a coupon? (Not to mention it's out of date)
This is just a complete mess now. I dunno if the scanner's worth 80, but as Merlin said, even $20 wouldn't be bad.. but how to even try to get there?
Justin42

I've been keeping an eye out on the AnandTech thread and the guy who claimed he was a Staples rep has admitted he made everything up about them not accepting the coupon + rebate.
I don't bring this up to make it sound like a soap opera, but I am trying to figure out what to do-- return the scanner or just send in the rebate-- has anyone heard anything halfway official?

Just got my scanner hooked up. Thanks mpd671 for the link to the updated driver... installation was flawless with my W2K. The inclusion of the PaperPort 7 Deluxe software and the usb and parallel cables was a really pleasant surprise. I've used PaperPort for years, and think it's fantastic. The scanner is faster than my HP ScanJet 4100C and produces better quality output. Guess it's time for the HP to find a new home. Thanks again for the tip.

MysterX - What do you mean? I don't see how AMEX can deny the PM just because there is a rebate. How are they to prove any of us even sent in a rebate? I don't see any loopholes in their policy that would give them the ability to reject the PM claims. I called AMEX yesterday and got my claim number (of course I wasn't about to tell them of the rebate).

What is the valid purchase dates for this rebate ($80)? I ordered this scanner online on Feb 17 but Staples says that it wasn't purchased within the valid dates?

Rebate coupon says "purchase must be made between 2/17/02 and 2/18/02."

I called AMEX today, and they sent out a check for $26.64 for the scanner's pricematch. Eventhough I claimed $99.99 when I filed, AMEX noted the coupon on my invoice and deducted $20 :P
Regardless, I made $10.05 from this deal.
86.59 - 20 (coupon) - 70 (rebate) - 26.64 (AMEX) = $10.05.
Not too shabby!:D
