Usually, you get the newsgroups with your ISP, but with all the free ISPs now...

Are there places you can get free Usenet access to the newsgroups, for those of us using free ISPs?

Free access to everything except alt.binaries.* is pretty easy to come by, especially if you don't mind an HTML front-end (I personally can't stand web interfaces.) In addition to remarq and deja, there's also www.webusenet.com. (http://www.webusenet.com.)

For a fairly frequently updated list of 'open' *ahem* NNTP servers, some of which carry binaries, check out www.newzbot.com. (http://www.newzbot.com.) www.newsservers.net (http://www.newsservers.net) used to have a good list, but stopped updating about a month ago.

Web interface (if it says a message is unavailable, try refreshing)

Even got alt.binaries.* BUT no easy decoding option.

You may want to check out www.mailops.com. (http://www.mailops.com.) They provide free mail and news service with SMTP or web access.

Freenewsgroups.com also has an updated current list of "public" USENET servers.

www.deja.com (http://www.deja.com)

Although somewhat hidden, they give you free access to a lot of newsgroups.
