i don't know how to take this :|

from http://www.garbage2.com/news.htm

"Shirley, Mary J. Blige and Elton John Named Spokespeople for Viva Glam IV and Mac Aids Fund

Shirley along with Sir Elton John and Mary J. Blige have been named the 2002 spokespeople for Mac's Viva Glam IV fundraising lipstick. An advertising campaign shot by photographer David LaChapelle will launch in February 2002. Since its creation in 1994, VIVA GLAM lipsticks have been the primary fund-raising tool for The M•A•C AIDS Fund. To date, the M•A•C AIDS Fund has raised more than $23 million in order to provide daily services for men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS around the world. One hundred percent of the $14.00 suggested retail price of the lipsticks go directly to the Fund."

I'll do ya one better. I think that in a lot of cosmetics and stuff have formaldehyde in them. (Yes, the stuff used to embalm the dead.)

From: http://bestchoice.itgo.com/dangers_top10.htm

10. IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA and DMDM HYDANTOIN: These are just two of the many preservatives that release formaldehyde (formaldehyde-donors). According to the Mayo clinic, formaldehyde can irritate the respiratory system, cause skin reactions and trigger heart palpitations. Exposure to formaldehyde may cause joint pain, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, Chronic fatigue, dizziness and loss of sleep. It can also aggravate coughs and colds and trigger asthma. Serious side effects include weakening of the immune system and cancer. Nearly all brands of skin, body and hair care, antiperspirants and nail polish found in stores contain formaldehyde-releasing ingredients.

From: http://www.purist.com.au/ingredients_no-preserve.htm

Preservatives are the most common cause of allergic reaction to cosmetics. Toxic preservatives such as methylchloroisothiazolinone (KATHON CG) and formaldehyde, should be avoided. The more irritating preservatives, such as the formaldehyde donors (imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol, and DMDM hydantoin), quaternium 15 and sorbic acid, should also be avoided. Take care when looking at products which make a feature of using "natural" preservatives. Such ingredients generally have a narrow spectrum of activity, and other preservatives must supplement their action.

Formaldehyde is an effective and cheap preservative which is used in some major brand hair care products. It is toxic, carcinogenic, and probably the most irritating ingredient used in personal care products. It is listed as "formalin" or "sodium formate" on product labels instead of its common name, formaldehyde, to veil its presence. This is currently legally acceptable practice. Consumers beware!

Formaldehyde finds its way into a wide range of cosmetics and toiletries as a preservative of raw materials. Formaldehyde is termed an "incidental ingredient" by the current Cosmetic Ingredient Disclosure Regulations when used in this way, and is exempted from having to be listed on the label! People with sensitivities can check with their cosmetics supplier for an assurance that formaldehyde is not used to preserve any raw ingredients used in their products.

"Formaldehyde is intensely irritating to mucous membranes, is toxic and a known skin sensitiser."

------------

Anyway, I know there is much, much more out there, like animal fats & lye are used to make bar soaps, etc. *shiver* My mil had to be tested for allergies a year or so ago and so she had these little strips of stuff put on her back. lol Very strange. :)
