Refresh rates

is there much of a [noticeable] difference between 60Hz and 75Hz ???
I'm trying to determine if one model of a monitor is worth spending $50+ more than a earlier model, because it supports 75Hz at the same resolution. (same brand/product line)

I think there is a pretty big difference between 60 and 75Hz. 60 just plain hurts my eyes. 75Hz is acceptable to me, but not ideal. However, different people have difference sensitivity to these things.

It should be just the flickering...

75 Hz is the minimum refresh rate I would recommend.
Personally I use 100Hz. Most people I know use 85Hz.

Let me second that... I wouldn't consider anything lower than 75Hz... not because I'm some sort of priss, but because lower than 75Hz hurts the eyes after just a short while.

Plus... when you're not looking directly at the monitor (at 60 Hz), it's just a flashing light in your peripheral vision. Just awful.

60hz is not an acceptable refresh rate unless its just checking something every now and then.

if you need to read more then one page of text at a time its a very bad idea in my opinion.

Lol.. I'm laughing in fear.. and confusion....

reasons why:

1. I'm running 60hz
2. I feel fine
3. I do it for hours at a time... 7hour sets at times
4. You guys say it's bad for my eyes.. now i'm scared!!!!!!

Is there an optometrist that can second the opinions said??? haha.. Cuz I feel fine.. really I do.

Sounds like you need a new video card!

Pull up a bright page on your monitor - maybe open Word without a document loaded so your screen is mostly white. Look at a space about 12" to either side of your monitor so you can see your screen in your peripheral vision. See how the screen flickers?

Now bump up your refresh rate to 75 or 85 (you'll probably have to lower your resolution to do this) and try again. See how the flickering goes away?

When you look at that screen all day long while it's flickering like that your eyes are straining to keep up with the images. Try running at a higher refresh rate for a few days & then switch back to 60 - you'll probably notice a difference right away, especially on bright colored pages.

The 955DF is supposed to do a maximum of 68Hz at 1600x1200. That's still too low for me. It's also still too low for most of the general population. Some people can tolerate low refresh rates better than others. Heihachi might be one of the few.

Our office building runs parallel to high tension power lines, despite the ever present risk of some form of cancer, they cause our CRT monitors to "wiggle" (that's a technical term, isn't it?) at anything less than 75hz. Sometimes, it's so annoying that it makes your stomach upset trying to read the POST or BIOS screens.

For us, the solution is to run LCD or sweet video card/CRT combinations, between 85 Hz – 100 Hz.

The power company (Excel Energy) states the range of the power is fixed at 60 Hz, but we see days where we know their cycling at 72 Hz.

My point, running your CRT at 60 Hz, while affecting the eyes of some people, is also affected by the electricity we run through into our homes and buildings, 110 – 120 Volts @ 60 Hz. Setting up your 60 Hz monitor near a high power source, like a generator, fluorescent light, refrigerator, air conditioner, etc, will definitely affect your image quality.

I decided to change my resolution to 1600x1024

I can up my refresh rates to 75hz now. I did it out of fear I guess.

Although my windows boxes are all "long-faced" I guess I'll just have to get used to that!

hehe, that's funny heihachi i'm running the same card and the same monitor, and i can't get mine to refresh at 70hz at 16x12. it'll do it at 60, but i just run 1280x1024, i'd like to try 16x12 at 68 but it's not in the settings. neither is 65.

Clutchy did you install the Monitor drivers? Not sure if that would do anything.

What feels comfortable or not has a lot to do with how you've trained your brain to see and decode images.
Some people can't tell the difference between 50FPS (50Hz) and 70FPS (70Hz). Some sharpshooters and navial aviatorshave trained their optic centers so that anything less than 80FPS (80Hz) is uncomfortable, without motion blurring (Television).

I got a hunch that most of us that play FPS's can tell the difference between 90 and 100 Hz...I know I can. And, any less than 75 Hz on a computee is really uncomforable, even when playing a game like Serious Sam.

BTW: 100Hz is my favorite resolution, so I don't play anything above 1024x768 on my Samsung 955DF

anywayz...i've switched to 75hz, i CAN tell the difference now. Like one member said earlier, just reading text set upon a white background bugs out my eyes, kinda like the text is fizzling right before my eyes.

i am kinda scared about the effects that 60hz has now, after 2 yrs at that rate. I already wear glasses, but my sight definetely hasnt gotten better! Oh well, whats done is done.

my monitor just sux, cuz as its highest refresh rate, u can kinda see the horiz and vertical lines going across the screen -- things just arent as 'clean' as 60hz. Oh well, i'd rather preserve my eyesight...
