Well I finally upgraded to XP from win2k, not a huge diff, just different look so far. But I have a Hercules 3D prophet II Geforce 2 GTS 64mb. So XP installs it's default drivers and they work ok... not too good in games and apps though, so I install the latest nvidia drivers and then every few minutes my computer locks up and gives me an error saying there is something wrong with the nt4.xxx file (can't remember exact file name) and it says that is went into an infinte loop...

I have tried several different drivers all with the same things happening. Just wondering if anyone knew anything about this or what I should do.

I think LPM is the "resident expert" on the XP infinite loop problem. ;)

thanks for the links, didn't know it was a big problem. I went and looked through some newsgroups at msft and there were a million people with the same problem. I uninstalled my 3d card and am now using the default windows drivers for it, they seem to be working so far for my games and everything else. I also installed the via 4in1 patch and that might have helped too.

BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh

update on what I said before... well it was working, now it is doing it again, but at least it is stable for a few hours at a time (woo hoo an improvement). Well looks like I have my project for the next week or so, thanks for the links and info. Hopefully I will have this fixed soon, if not looks like I might as well push my upgrade ahead a few weeks or so.

To me so far, XP looks to be a more colorful, flashy, buggy new version

A combo of things that finally fixed it for me - a new power supply, going into the bios and changing the manual AGP driver to FF, and changing the heatsink, because even at 50C, it can make the error more likely. Then it finally went away.

This might help too :http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=6&threadid=4453

Ok been running stable for over 12 hours now... that is a good thing. I went into the bios and changed a few things with my AGP, I can't remember the exact setting, I think it was fastwrite, but it seems to have helped things. I haven't gotten a crash yet. Even though for most of those 12 hours I have been sleeping, but hey so far so good.

Thanks for all the articles and help though
