Is this a good deal for a celeron 566?

The buy.com site doesn't say anything about it being a celeron II, but the highest celeron II I have seen is the 533. The 566 is a Celeron II, right?

It is $100.95.

I want to be sure that my message is clear, so let me clear my throat first... ah-ah-hem... YES, that would be a super deal.

Do they have the 600?

And with a 3 year warranty, it looks like you might get a heatsink and a fan with that. It would be the first Boxed Celeron 566 that I have seen.

what is the overclockability on this chip? is this the celeron 2 566 that can be cranked up past 900 mhz? if so...i'm in!

Yeah, I forgot to write that it was on backorder. I did however, happen to see it on Saturday night go green for a few hours - maybe they were getting stock in at that time???

I tried to use the $50 off coupon on a purchase of just $200, but when I hit submit order, it came back saying I did not have $500 in my cart.

Why am I not asleep yet? Anyways, I just built a system around this chip and it does 850 with no probs. In it's home motherboard, however, it had a few (very few) troubles at 850 so I just knocked it down to 700 and went for stability since it's not going to be my system.

But I put the chip in my home system to test it out and see how far it could go and it rode at 850 like a champ on my P3V4X in an Abit slocket. Cool (idle 80*F - 112*F full load) and everything with a golden orb. 900 is a reasonable goal for this chip. That new Asus CuV4X socket 370 board would house this chip QUITE NICELY. Crank it up, F'ers.

Nice chip, especially for under a hundred.

I sell systems using the Tekram board which I get from this site:
http://store.tekramusa.com:80/shop/product.asp?dept%5Fid=2&sku=220

Will this board support this Celeron 566 ? And what the heck is the difference between a PPGA and FC-PGA (flip-chip) ?

Thanks,
Glenn (TVDoc)

Blue, I don't think that board supports Cel-2's, but I could be wrong. I think they are saying 'there is no way we are going to keep supporting this board with bios updates so take it or leave it.'

The chip you are all referring to is a FC-PGA which is, in fact different from a PPGA (Socket 370). If you have a Socket 370 Motherboard you will have to get a new board that supports FC-PGA (unless you can find an adapter).

These chips are highly overclockable but realize a couple of things. Lets say you get it to around 700mhz. Don't expect P3-700 level performance in games. These Celeron II chips do not have the same amount or speed of cache as their P3 big brothers carry so be a little wary. I have seen benchmarks on sites like andandtech.com and tomshardware.com that show P3s outperforming a similiarly clocked Celeron II by as much as 50-60%. Celeron's are great, don't get me wrong, but I stopped buying them for games a long time ago.

Look, when you can buy three of these chips for the same price as a P3 that will clock to 900 with air cooling, I don't want to hear any gripe-ing about performance. For less than a hundred bucks, give the chip a break.

Oh yes... get a Via133A board so that you can run your mempory at 100 or 133.... a major killer of the Celeron is the 66MHz bus and the limited RAM bandwidth that it causes. But running it at 100 or 133 will help a bunch.

So which motherboard are you gurus recommending with this Celeron chip?

Dave_7
06-26-2000, 05:45 PM
I say try the new Socket 370 Asus board with the Via 133A chipset. Should be stable like the P3V4X but you won't need a slocket ($15-$20). It only has three DIMMs but I know ZERO people who have three full DIMMs and are complaining for "JUST ONE MORE, My GOD what I wouldn't give for just ONE MORE free DIMM slot. ARRRGGGGH!!!"

So that point may be moot, much like the 4X AGP slot a few moths ago. Let me 'splain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up... By the time I am going to have a video card (and games) that need 4X AGP, I'll have a new chip, new RAM, and a new motherboard.

I wouldn't pass on a good board looking for one with a 4th DIMM, but then again, I have A stick of 128 RAM. I don't plan to add more than one stick anyway. So, maybe it's just me?

Enough. Via133A socket 370 ASUS board.

I just found out that the celeron 566 that I ordered on 6/21 from buy.com is on its way. It was shipped on Monday. I should receive it tomorrow. I will post info about it tomorrow.

I will try it in my bh6 system as soon as I get it if anyone can tell me if I can use the MS 6905 (but not the 6905 master) slotket adapter, and use the voltage settings from the motherboard itself - I have the latest bios update for the BH6 that is supposed to allow for celeron II. Thanks.

I have another system to try it in, but it is an i810 system that has does not allow for voltage tweaking.

Has anyone seen any benchmarks comparing this celeron chip to k6-2s or k6-3s? I think the 550 k6-2 has more cache and I know it only costs like $70.

That $20 off coupon is not good anymore, is there a new one?

progman - the old PPGA Celeron wiped the floor with the K6's. The K6 is great at Integer math, but has an inferior FPU compared to the Celeron/PII. The K6 claws that ground back a bit with 3DNow!, but that's in the same bag as SSE - it requires software support, so it ain't all that common. DirectX supports it, and some titles do, but not a lot of 'em make full use of it.

With the coppermine core, the FPU was tweaked a little. Not much, but a couple of % up. However, with the increase in clock rates, the K6 is left for dead. An FC-PGA Celeron still wins in FPU performance at stock speed, and given how far you can overclock these things...

K6 is a good upgrade if you're still got a socket7 system. It's perfect if you've got a decent motherboard and something like a P200 or whatever. However, it's not worth building a whole new box around it - just too much hassle, and absolutely no upgrade path. AGP performance on socket7 can be problematic at times, and never gets close to the BX chipset.

Duron is a different story... http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey dave, is the Asus board actually $20 or am i just reading it wrong? What other boards do you recommend and about how much?

i think he meant the slocket for the flip chip conversion to slot one for $15-$20...

Okay, I think i might get this chip since it's such a good deal. Don't know if you guys remember but I was thinking of getting a new comp. At this rate, I might as well have it built. I have a new Maxtor DiamondMax 30.0GB Hard Drive Kit from Staples. If I get this processor, what else do I need and how much? Where can I get a compatible board?

Yeah, I meant that the Slocket you'd need if you got a slot1 motherboard.

It sounds like it would be a solid, if cost-effective and fast, solution.

Check it out.
