View Full Version : Reborn Newbie processor question

Ok, I used to always build my own systems from my first Sinclair ZX-81 (in 1981) up to about a Cyrix 166 (in 1996). Then real life took over and I didn't have any time...

Anyway, now I feel like a total newbie because all I want to do is upgrade the processor in my HP 8580c. The motherboard uses a 440BX 100MHz chipset. I've been able to determine that the best Slot 1 processor I can get is an 850MHz PIII.

Will this proc work in my MB? Or does HP make modifications to the MB that will prevent it from working? HP will not offer any advice.

Have a look at http://www.powerleap.com/Products/iP3T.htm & take it up to a 1.2GHz Tualatin - probably for the same price or less than the PIII 850.

Hey, thanks! That looks like it'll work for me.

Now the big question - will upgrading from a 500MHz PIII to a 1.2GHz Celeron make a $169 difference?

Not considering that $169 could probably buy you a much larger difference in performance.

He would have to make the switch to AMD; but the only really big hold up for him would be the probable switch to DDR. Durons clock for clock are cheaper and faster than the Celerons.

89 for a boxed 1.2 tualatin that ocerclocks to 1.5ghz with a 5 degree raise.... cheaper and faster ehh...

Yes, $89 is cheaper than $169, but you forgot the motherboard. :P

Anyway, like I said, there is also the problem of switching ram. If he can find a 1.2 GHz tualatin board that also accepts SDRAM, then I'd say he's set, but otherwise, $169 is over paying for what you get, IMO.
