City chews on mystery as Big Boy found

WILKES-BARRE Ñ As head of the city's Neighborhood Impact Team, Sally Healey has seen some pretty strange things, but boy, did she get a big surprise Thursday.
"Big Boy was in the corner, as big as life," Healey said, describing the discovery of the statue that was snatched from outside the now-closed Elby's Big Boy Restaurant on Kidder Street.
The statue, along with several street signs, were found at 68 Bennett St. during a routine inspection of off-campus college housing, Healey said. The NIT team was inspecting the apartments for building code and safety violations.
"This is the first time we've found something this bizarre," she said. "It took up an entire corner."
The statue was in good condition, but the "Big" in his name had been covered with a home-made sign that changed his name to "Beer Boy."
Healey said a city police officer was questioning the occupant of the apartment about the statue. It could not be determined Thursday if criminal charges will be filed, or where the statue was taken. Police did not issue a press release on the incident. Public Information Officer Capt. Laralee Riemensnyder did not return two phone messages.
Healey said crews had a tough time getting the statue out of the building. It couldn't fit through the door, so city workers were called in to cut out the front window.
"He was lighter than we thought, but he was bulky. He's a tad heavyset in the middle and he has that pompadour," she said with a laugh.
