M$ has ticked me off for (hopefully) the last time. I've decided to dedicate some serious time to Linux, with two goals: a multi-function server/firewall and a good "office" box. Both will run Mandrake Linux, at least for now. As I learn I'd like to get completely away from a GUI on the server.
Server hardware: PPro180/64, two 80Gb drives, one 30gb drive, 3 100Mbit NICs, Plextor 12x10x32, PNY 16mb PCI vid card. I'll leave the memory at 64 for now - I've heard that Linux can more readily deal with less memory than Win2k, so I'll put that to the test. This box will serve as a firewall/router/dhcp server/web server/ftp server, as well as storage for my little LAN.
One NIC will go to the outside world with the other two forming two segments on my LAN. Two segments will be useless for my 4-node LAN, but I want the experience of using Linux as a bridge.
I'll also install Star Office and play with swapping office documents between it and Office 2k.
I started the project last night with one of my 80gb drives and one NIC. Over the next few days I'll add the other two NICs and the 2nd & 3rd hard drives.
Ultimately the server will be headless. I'll use telnet to login and do admin stuff.
