Pair of New York penguins are gay

A pair of penguins seen having sex with each other at New York Aquarium have turned out to be males.

Wendell and Cass are both 14 and were only recently found to be male after staff carried out a blood test.

The black-footed penguins have been together for about eight years.

The Daily Telegraph reports Angie Pelekedis, a spokeswoman for the aquarium on Coney Island, said: "They're one of the most dedicated couples in the penguin enclosure. They sleep in the same nest. They even have sex, though I don't know how successful that is."

Penguin keeper Stephanie Mitchell added: "I was only seeing one mate with the other, but then one of the other keepers saw it happen the other way round. We did a blood test that proved they were both male.

"Cass tends to be a rather aggressive bird. Wendell is very nervous; always has been. He's on edge all the time. They're currently in a dispute with another couple over their nest. It seems to be one of the most desirable places in the penguin enclosure."

hahahah...8 years and they didnt know it? youd thing theyd have a baby by then, but they didnt so of course they are guys

Actually they had a report on CNN about this the other day. It said that they werent treated any differently by the other penguins. They also had a "penguin penthouse" which one of them always had to be in to prevent losing their primo pad. - I kid you not, this is what was actually said on the news.

It was interesting, they told zoo goers and they all thought that they were joking.

Wow. I told my wife this and she told me this happens sometimes (not often) in nature. I'm inclined to believe her since she does have a degree in behavioral psychology and she told me matter-of-factly.

She did have a good laugh when I told her about the penthouse and how they dress well and enjoy the theatre...

when i was in model UN, i wrote a resolution once about protecting homosexual penguins from the abuse of the straights... it seems penguin society has now advanced beyond the need for such protections.

now if only we could get straight humans to act like that...
