so why is it ok for girls to call each other babes....?

welfareloser
02-21-2002, 07:53 PM
a person's attitude may be offensive regardless of the terminology they choose. chick or babe can be wonderful and cute and funny coming from the right person, and even woman or girl can be horrendously offensive coming from the wrong person. so i never care, 'cept that female sounds all clinical. "that female appears to be in good reproductive health." blech.

hummina-humminas

*disclaimer: mojo does not use any of the appended terms. he prefers to use the terms "ladies, "girls," or "women" depending on the audience.

I've never called another girl "babe" either. I guess it doesn't so much matter what you call us as much as the way you say it. Personally I like "ladies"

all the girls i know (especially my friend Karis) will use babe in this manner (like when seeing someone fir the first time in a year or so...)

"Hey babe, how've you been?"

i donno... it sounds weird when i explain it, but it sounds completely normal when she says it..

i know girls who do it, like my fiance's neighbor brenda. and nodamnedsense's sister. i think maybe it's a southern thing (they're from georgia and kentucky, respectively) not that others don't do it too...

i guess i tend to use girls for people that i feel are in my peer group, cuz even with motherhood and a divorce under my belt, i still don't feel like an adult (i think it will take losing inches to osteoporosis before that sets in)

:heh:

Ladies is good, like if a guy comes up to a group of women and says, "How are you today, ladies?"

I don't like to be called chick. It just seems kinda derogatory. We aren't a barnyard animal, for crying outloud. Babe is ok, girl is ok.

Grimm
02-22-2002, 10:18 AM
Call 'em whatever they deserve. If they act like ladies, then call them ladies. If they act like psycho-bitches, I call them psycho-bitches. If they don't like it tell them that their behavior decides theri tilte and they will need to change their behavior for you to change what you call them.

If they don't like what you call them they will most likely leave you alone, which is probably the objective to begin with.

the only time i dislike girls is when a guy in an office refers collectively to secretaries as "girls," (not at all nice to use a casual term in a business setting, it's a lack of respect, regardless of age) or worse yet, "my girl," as in "i'll make my girl take care of it," "i'll send my firl out for coffee." urgh.

I prefer "ladies" since...

"I'm not girl, not yet a woman"! ;)

I think chicks, babes, and honeys would be the most offensive out of your list. You can't really go wrong with ladies.

Why call them anything. Just walk up to the group and say hey, how's it going. As for individuals, I kinda agree with Grimm. If they act like ladies, call them ladies. If they are young, call them girls. If they are psycho-bitches, just don't call them. :D

And yeah, I kind of agree that its inappropriate to call women "girls" in a professional environment. I would refer them as "ladies" in that type of scenerio.

In any case, I only use the term 'girls' to refer to women who are close to me. Some of my friends don't like to be called "chick" because its not exactly PC. Calling them "women" sometimes makes them sound old. And "ladies" its either too formal or makes them feel old.

I've always been fond of broads.

It's all context. It is irrelevant what you are a called by someone you don't give a rats butt about.

I was in texas for 6 months many years ago, and everyone was darlin'. To this day, I find myself saying that to wymen, but no one has ever bitched yet. Of course, there are certain chicks I wouldn't do that with, cause dem broads is mean. Those dolls ain't got no sense of style. Girlies is like that, I guess.

Seriously, I've used doll and darlin', but again, it's the context. The ones I do it with are good friends, and seem to like it. I wouldn't do it to some stranger I don't know. Her I'd call dame.

on another note, there's this girl at the local lenny's that sometimes waits on me (when i'm there, dammit...not at home :hihi: ). she calls everyone "hun" (short for hunny, i'm thinkin...since she couldn't possibly know about my stint as attila). anyhow, i always wondered how i'd feel under those circumstances if someone i was seeing called everyone that...all of a sudden "hun" would lose its luster. my ex-wife called me "hun" (before she changed my name to "ass") and it was fine.

Well, when I come up to a group, it's either ladies or guys (I consider guys to be gender neutral, and if they don't like it, I fall in line with Grimm).

But, when at all possible, I prefer to use proper names.
