I myself don't have dyed hair, but this girl does....and her school didn't like it.

A Suffolk schoolgirl had her pink hair airbrushed out of her year group photograph because teachers said the colour was incompatible with school uniform.
Ashley Wallace, 16, claimed she had dyed her hair pink to complement what she said was her "extravagant" personality.

But the head teacher at Northgate High School in Ipswich asked the photographers to change Ashley's pink hair to a mousy brown colour on the finished photograph.

Ashley has complained she was not informed of the decision.

"I felt humiliated about it, it's just such a personal insult," she said.

"My friends were shocked and thought it was awful and couldn't stand it and are just as upset.

"The school has told me to change the colour but I'm not going to, I'm going to keep it this colour forever," she said.

Reasonable

Head teacher Neil Watts said the school had been trying to resolve the issue of Ashley's hair since before Christmas.

Despite his liaising with Ashley and her parents, her hair had stayed a pink colour, Mr Watts said.

"We have acted very reasonably - we have not excluded Ashley from school, we have allowed her to attend normal lessons in the final year of her GCSE studies," he said.

"As head teacher I have to be aware of the messages we send to other pupils and fundamentally pink hair is not acceptable at Northgate," Mr Watts said.

"We feel strongly that as the photograph is a record for the school and all the other pupils in the year group, Ashley's hair colour does not bring credit upon the other pupils and the school.

"Therefore we asked the photographic company to tone down the hair colour in the photograph."

The school had high standards, which he intended to maintain, he added.

Ashley's stepfather, Chris Andrews, said: "We are fully behind Ashley's decision to have that colour of hair.

"We do not feel it's going to be detrimental to her education and her future plans to be a website designer."

if i went there (depending on the girls attitude) i would probably dye my hair pink too... and try to convince as many others to do it als... or at least SOME other color...

Of course, i woulldn't've gone to that school in the first place because of the uniforms.

rules are rules. She knew what she was doing. They wear uniforms for a reason, and it isnt to show thier indiviiduality.

it's only hair color for crying out loud..it's not like she's smoking crack in the halls or anything(at least not that they are mentioning)..they should give her credit for BEING IN SCHOOL and not living in an alley way with drug addicts..Unless she's like the daughter in that movie TRAFFIC. When My son dyed his hair blue and gold for football I didnt even flinch..he's the one who had to wear it-not me.

:D I had my hair pink. It was great. My work didn't like it, but I would wear my hair up and they wouldn't notice.
I want to dye my hair pink right now.....but my boss said no :(
I don't see anything wrong with her hair color, it would be like telling someone who dyes their hair red from blonde that they can't.
Granted this isn't a " natural " color, it is her preferance and she's the one that has to be seen like that, no one else.

Sounds like this girl has a choice to make...

Keep the pink hair and find another school or keep the school and change the hair color.

Thus far it sounds like the school has far more accomodating than they're getting credit for. I guess they should have put their foot down earlier. If they did they would not be in the news as a member of this ridiculous story.

What's wrong with pink hair? Too many people equate different with "not good".

Nothing wrong with pink hair (I used to be a big fan of JEM... *starts singing "Jem is my name, and no one else is the same. Jem is my name, JEM!!!)but, I do think a school is allowed to have whatever dress code they want. If she doesn't like it, go to another school.

You give kids an inch and they take a mile. You give them a dress code so what do they do? Dye their hair. Say they can't dyr their hair, what do they do? Paint their nails in weird colors or get colored contacts. Teenagers are attention whores and will do ANYTHINg to get attention. I don't feel sorry for her at all, I hate to sound like a conformist but at some point you have to realize childish behavior is childish.

Here's my friend with his dyed hair. The school wouldn't let him go to class, so he had to go back and have it dyed darker until it looks more "brown". I thought it looked really cool, $60 for a day and a half of pink hair... and then another $50 or so to get it darker.

Its childish because she isn't doing it for any reason other than to make a spectacle of herself which is a childish act.

how do u know that? did u ask her?

did you maybe think that she might just likes how it looks? aren't people entitled to their own opinions? just because you think she looks like a "spectacle" doesn't mean that others do.

also, by your account, when i died my hair hot pink it was for the sole reason to make a spectacle of myself, right? and i was being childish by not doing what YOU say is correct or acceptable?

hm, doesn't that seem a little childish? if you don't get your way you start calling people names and making accusations?

thanks for being incredibly offensive!

News flash, my hair is dyed too. But I didn't do it for any reason other than I thought it looked better and hopefully get some more of the right kind of attention.

There is no reason to dye her hair pink other than to draw attention to herself. Don't say, "its an extention of her personality," because thats sad. Is she so shallow that she bought her personality in a can?

Sorry if I offended people by calling her childish, which she is, but seriously, the only people that dye thier hair pink are people that ARE young or WANT TO BE young. Its done for attention. Attention craving isn't an adult virtue, it is a childish one.

the school? yes, they are being childish. they are acting out in that ill-manner that you defamed teenagers with in your first statement. they took liberties with someone else's likeness in the yearbook, of all things. there go her memories.

bad school! bad! :bonk:

No, unless you are one of those retards that bring their guitar to parties and try to impress people by playing there. Those people are awful.

The school was out of hand for editting the color in the yearbook, thats just crazy. I still think they are allowed to allow or ban whatever they want tho, especially because it is a private school and they have even more freedom in that dept.
