It was definately strong enough to feel. The Indians here looked a little nervous (when they have earthquakes in India they are usualy big ones).
Anyone else feel it?

it must not have been too big, as i didn't feel it here in detroit :heh:
(sorry, i had to get into the earthquake talk somehow. we don't have exciting stuff like that in michigan)

Looks like the big one there had a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 with the epicenter down in Mexico.
Looks like there's been activity there for a while so there were fore-shocks to this one starting yesterday at least.

Here's a link to the list of recent Earthquakes for all of California:

You're looking at the wrong one - that's one of the aftershocks.

Hey, I was bored. And it was a 5.2.
It was funny, a lot of peeps here are from out of state/country. Some were running for the stairs. :heh:
ufcrusher, it was more of a rolling quake. Not all quakes "shake". You can miss them if you are leaning back, you just think you are off balance for a few seconds.
oh, i'm used to them...but i still pay attention. i mean, you never know when a big one is gonna hit. all these peeps talkin about how small these quakes are...you know it's more relief than anything else. doubtful any of us would want to see one where the walls crack or whatever.

I know there are many that are equal to this or greater.. But I was in the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 89'. Lots of walls cracked..
I was at my brother's computer store at the time. I was a lil' rugrat (okay I still am.. but thats beside the point) and playing computer games in the computer showroom w/my sister. We would sometimes shake the tables or some of the employees would mess with us. Suddenly, the table started shaking.. I told my sis "stop shaking the table dangit!".. soonafter, we were like uhh.. whats goin on..? everyone started walkin out... the earthquake lasted like 30 seconds or so? cars and buses were stopped.. power lines were swaying.. street lights were going haywire.. And all through this, there was a client inside still talking to my brother about a computer repair.. hehe..
Any of you have interesting earthquake stories? =P

:heh: just that one big on that we had like 3 or 4 yrs ago freaked me out. it was the middle of the night (like 2 or 3a) and i was still awake, and i had my computer in my lap. i had to put it on the coffee table and i ran to the bedroom to try to wake up my then-wife and stuff. i have this habit of waiting a few seconds to see how severe it is before i get excited about it (which of course i wouldnt do if stuff was flying off of shelves or whatever). by the time i got back there, it was over...but it was to the point where i felt the need to try to protect the loved ones.

The interesting thing about this link for California Earthquakes (http://www.scecdc.scec.org:3128/recenteqs/Quakes/quakes0.html) is you can see just how seismically active California really is.
Granted 99% of them are micro-minor quakes that you can't feel, you can still see where the aftershock process is still going on for quakes that happened yesterday or 5 years ago.
This one near the California/Mexico border was very shallow so it was likely felt over a large area and might even have a surface rupture (pretty cool - I saw the Landers surface rupture about 8 years ago). It's had some good sized aftershocks with it so there could still be some serious activity coming.

Damn thing woke me up. I woke up after the shaking....so I didn't know what happened, and i fell back asleep.
I did that with a 6.0 earthquake once. I just woke up in the tail end. Sat up for like 20 seconds, and went baack to sleep
Well, I'm glad you are all safe.

Don'tcha get twisters there? Sounds like fun! I also wonder how Hurricanes and Volcanos are.. And as for floods, its somewhat unlikely in San Francisco considering all the hills and stuff.. But anything is possible.. Gotta experience 'em all!
You getting nervous out there on the west coast Grimm? Move some place where the ground don't shshshake. :heh:

If we had that up here, people woulda gone crazy. We had that 6.8 last year that caused a small amount of damage, people were freaked. My parents got my little brother out of school, and made me go the rest of the day. :bawl:

Yeah.. but Twisters only hit a house here, a house there... And lately they have stayed out in the "open farmland" areas rather than in the city...
If it's all the same... the "big one" is comin' and I'd just feel a bit safer here than there. Thanks.
Nah, its like a rollercoaster! Seeing the roads roll around.. Even the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge wobble.. fun fun fun.. =P

That earthquake up in Washington State (The Nisqually Earthquake) was very deep too - even when you're at the epicenter you're still 52 kilometers away from the actual quake. That's the main reason there wasn't much damage.
When one is near the surface, even a moderate one like this 5.2 can be a rollercoaster.

I posted it as a point of interest. It's not a big deal. I am not moving to some place with huricanes and tornadoes. The occational shake is no big deal.
The biggest quake I have been in was originaly recorded as a 7.2 but it was downgraded to a 6.9 but I was 100 yards from the fault and 400 yards from the epicenter! Now that was some shaking.

I thought the epicenter doesn't shake as much..? I've been to I think it was San Luis Obispo or some other city to take a look at the San Andreas Fault.. didn't see much damage along there..

I felt it here at work. I was on the phone and when it started shaking, I stood up and walked over to the doorway, without missing a beat in my conversation.
BTW I went to high school in Calexico! :)
