ok, so my sister needs to make a mouse trap for a science project. does anyone know of any innovative designs or ideas? she is supposed to try and invent something new. also, if you have any other idea for an invention that can be made for a 6th grade science fair project, please give your input..thanks!

haha good idea....but what if we have a non-horny mouse or one that just gets some...the kind that get some are probably the rowdy ones and are the ones u wanna get rid of.

You could use something with a one way door. In and not out :D

hmm..good idea. she needs to try and thing of something innovative, and ive seen one way doors before...i keep telling her to poison the food or suffocate the mouse or electrocute it...but, i guess she doesnt want to kill it.

That's an easy one. Just tape a picture of Janet Reno to the floor. That should scare the poor creature to death!

We used to have a mouse trap that was supposedly an "inhumane" solution(meaning it catches them alive for release somewhere else). It was a two room steel box. You bait the first room. When the mouse enters, he puts pressure on the floor and that in turn springs him into the second room and a divider slams shut between room 1 and 2 thereby trapping the mouse. Thing is, the trap had about a 50% success rate... Sometimes the divider would catch them and guillitine them between the 1st and 2nd room. Not a pretty sight...

you could make a miniature catpult that sends the mouse flying into a bucket of water. bait the mouse and when it steps on a little thing the other little thing can spring the catapult and it will send the mouse flying into a bucket of water.

how about we catapult the bucket of water at the mouse instead?
or how about this... you know those metal bracelets that stay straight until you put pressure on them, then they curl up? Well, get those but long ones, stick a net on them, then put food in the middle. The mouse walks to the middle, puts pressure and they all curl up, trapping the mouse. Then we go to the kitchen, get the pot of boiling water nice and warm. Put the seasoning in, remember... not too much salt as the mouse is already salty enough. Now we'd like to skin the furry thing first, get a sharp filet knife and cut a gash from the underside of the creature. Oh wait... we gotta kill it first... hmm... Mix Windex and Ajax, it will make a poisonous gas. Now let the mouse breathe that gas in until it dies.
Okay, now we proceed with skinning. We'd like to cut the underside from the neck to the tail. Not to deep though. Now we cut it horizontally in the middle, all around. Now stick the knife in and start peeling, it helps if you put warm water on the area where you're cutting. Umm... and feel free to take off the head too because you don't want that part, oh and the tail, unless you're into noodly looking things. I find that soaking the thing on lemon water for a couple hours to be really beneficial. But From here on, you can pretty much finish em like your grandma showed you...

How about a high powered vacuum cleaner that is triggered when a circut is completed, between the floor and the food. Peanut butter could be used for bait, so it would not get sucked up. The trap could suck for 30 seconds, enough to catch the mouse, and then reset.

oh, it's for a 6th grader? then the mouse trap should be one of those violent 6th grade boys with a rubber mallet.

what about making an illusion of a crack in the floor, but the crack is actually a DEATH PIT!!!!

Well, here's something I saw a drawing for once. It involved a standard mouse trap, a coffee can, and some "hardware cloth" (the course screen-like material you can buy at hardware stores). You cut a slot in the bottom of the coffee can so that the trigger mechanism is inside the open end of it. You cover the "business" bar of the trap with a piece of hardware cloth shaped to cover the open end of the coffee can. The base of the trap is fastened to the can. What you end up with is a "live trap" that is supposed to humanely (not "inhumanely" as erroniously was used to describe a purported "humane" device) trap the mouse for release in another place. You can even throw some cut off vegetation to give the poor little mousey a place to hide in the can until it can be released.
Now, if I could design the perfect trap, there would be no survivors. :D

Well, there is a pretty effective trap out there. It's basically a tray with nearly solidified glue with some bait in the middle. The mouse smells the bait, walks on over to the middle. It then realizes that it is stuck and can not break free. We saw a few mice that tried to gnaw their legs off in a last minute, desparate attempt to break free.

I suppose it depends on the 6th grader.
He asked for ideas for a humane mouse trap. I gave one. I tried to be original. If someone couldn't dream it first, no one could build it.
Your contribution was what? some smileys and an "o bite me"?

Actually, I'm not sure you want to kill the mouse this way if you plan to eat it. There are 2 better ways that I can think of to kill the mouse to eat.
1) Hold the neck of the mouse down against the countertop and pull on the mouse's tail. In mice, the tail are attached to the spinal column, and holding the neck down while pulling on the tail will break it's neck.
2) Hold the mouth of the mouse closed and cover it's nostrils. The mouse will suffocate to death. Note: This takes a long time to do, so I'd actually suggest the first method as the method of choice. :P

items:
small bucket
thin metal rod
soda can
peanutbutter
liquid
1. insert metal rod through can (lengthwise)
2. drill 2 small holes on each side of the can/bucket (near the top)
3. insert rod w/ can
4. fill bucket 1/2 way with fluid (i prefer antifreeze, ajax or draino)
5. smear peanutbutter on can evenly (as to distrubute weight)
watch the mouse dance on the can like a lumberjack on a log in a river....splash! dead mousey.
EDIT: forgot the ramp...the mouse needs a way to get to the can.
here's a pic:

check this site...funny stuff...although some of these traps may not be appropriate for a 6th grader.
