built my first computer and turned it on but have a few problems. The one i am most worried about is a post code that is showing on my motherboard which is an epox 8kha+. Im getting post code 7F. Looked in motherboard manuel and all around the internet and on the epox website but can't find what it means. in the manuel they list several post codes but all of them are 3 digits. why are they 3 digits if only 2 digits can fit on the motherboard post code place? This really worries me to what this code means? also another problem i am having is when i turn the computer on it says "secondary IDE channel no 80 conductor cable installed." On my secondary IDE channel i have 2 cd drives so i thought i didn't need an 80 conductor cable. I just put the standard ATA 33 cable for the cd drives.why would it be saying that i need an 80 conductor cable on this channel? Im pretty sure though that an 80 conductor cable is installed on the primary IDE where my hard drives are. Any help with these problems would be appreciated. Especially the post code problem. Thanks.

Have you tried clearing out the cmos? that can solve an awful lot of problems.

how do i clear out cmos? Ive heard about it but don't know how to do it. there is a jumper on my motherboard that says clear cmos but not sure how it works. do i just cover up the pins that will clear cmos? do i leave them covered? Thanks.

The clear cmos jumper should have 3 pins. You just have to shift the jumper over to one side--I think that if you attempt to start the computer while the jumper is in position, it won't work. Once you've moved the jumper, you can just move it back to the original position. Your cmos should now be cleared.

Also, does the 8kha+ have built-in RAID and ATA 100? If that is the case, you might have to use an 80-pin addapter even for your CD-rom drives. Another thing is, if this is the case, you might want to attach your CD-roms through the normal IDE connections.

the epox 8kha+ does not have raid but is ATA 100 compatible. but my bios detects all the drives, so why would i need to connect an 80 wire IDE cable for the cdroms?

I was only saying that in the case that you had them hooked up through the RAID controller, but you don't have one so that shouldn't be a problem.

But the other thing is, if you don't have an 80 pin IDE cable--regardless of whether the devices on it are ATA 66/100/133 or not, you might be getting that error. The computer might just be giving you that error to let you know that ATA 100 has been disabled.

don't the cd drives only run at ATA33? The error im getting is saying that the secondary IDE doesn't have an 80 pin connector. i don't need one though because 80pin are only for hard drives right? you might be right about saying the computer is giving me this message saying that ATA100 is disabled on the secondary IDE channel.
Does anyone know though what post code 7F means? ive looked everywhere and still don't understand what this means and if its really bad. here is what it says in the manuel:

1. Switch back to text mode if full screen logo is supported
-if errors occur, report errors and wait for keys
-if no errors occur or the F1 key is pressed to continue:
* Clear EPA or customization logo.
can i install the Operating system even though i have this weird post code? Thanks.

What video card do you have in this new system?
I had the exact same problem with an Elsa Gladiac GeForce3. The porblem was tied to the video card. When I re-inserted the card a few times the problem went away and everything worked. I also have the problem of the no 80 conductor cable installed and traced it to the fact I do not have an ATA 100 hard drive (all SCSI)

I have an ATI radeon 7500 video card. I don't see how i installed it wrong because if i did, the computer wouldn't even turn on, right? Im not sure what it means when it says no 80 conductor cable installed. What is an 80 conductor cable? it says i dont have on installed on my secondary IDE channel. But why would i need a special cable for both my cd drives?

In order to use ATA 66 or higher, you have to have an 80 pin cable. I don't know what the exact difference is, but something about older IDE cables won't allow for ATA 66 or higher.
