oooops  maybe I should shut down @ night
Definitely glad I went with a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV for my last hard drive after hearing about the failure rates with the 60GXP and 75GXP. Next time I buy a hard drive it won't be an IBM either.

The article talks about the 120GXP, but nothing of the 60GXP or 75GXP. It does mention the Travelstar though. Until I see one that specifically mentions the 60GXP or 75GXP, I'll continue to purchase IBM (except that 120GXP). I've had no problems with them, with the exception of the one I dropped :P Oh, and I tend to leave my computers on 24/7.
BTW, whats "pixie dust" technology?

I have a 60GXP for 3 weeks and my computer is on most of the time (DL) without any problem yet! I'm thinking of purchasing that Dell 500SC for data backup and/or server!

I had happily been running two 45GM 75GXPs in Raid 0 for about 14 months, until last night...

for about 8 or 10 months I've been running a 60GXP IBM almost 24/7 definately more than 15hours a day doing video editing, sound recording, file sharing etc on my network. I've yet to have a bit of a problem with it. :-)

Well, it's only been three weeks! There isn't going to be any problems that soon. I had my PC on constantly for like 4 months before problems started to develope. IBM is being ridiculous. Hard drives are supposed to be able to stay on 24 hours a day. 8 hours a day? Give me a break. IBM is trying to play off their incredible design flaw by saying that the users are overworking their drives.

I've had 2 of my drives running for over a year already. I do lots of transferring and deleting in those drives too. I keep 'em on constantly.. Not a problem. When I read the review, it was about the 120GXP, but mentioned nothing about 8 hrs thing for the 60GXP or 75GXP. Did I miss something?

I've heard conflicting reports about how reliable the 60gxp is, and I've only had mine running for 4 months or so, I think and have had no problems. I woulda jumped all over the Barracuda IV if it wasn't so expensive back then.

MY 75GXP has been working PEFERCTLY for your info to all of ya guys... I've been doing the stuff mentioned above... had it for about a year now.
WOULD I BUY ANOTHER IBM HD?
HECK NO! HECK NO! HECK NO! HECK NO! HECK NO!
Why gamble w/ something when it's been proven defective to SOME/MANY/NOT ALL but MANY people.
I was just the luck of the draw.
Personally I agree w/ LEON. IBM should really start taking responsbility for their mistakes.
(hoping I get a click, click pop soon.. Then I'll have an excuse to put 2 WD's 8MB Buffer in raid 0)
So I've heard that these SPECIAL Edition drives perform on par w/ Raid 0 on other comps.... has anyone seen the benchmarks w/ the SPECIAL EDITION drives in raid 0? I wonder if it's SUPER DUPER FAST.. hehe

The failure rates for these drives are pretty high, but users who will not have the drives fail on them are still in the majority. However, their failure rates are still astronomical in terms of hard drives. I have had four IBM hard drives. Two 30GB 75GXPs and two 40GB 60GXPs. How many have I had to RMA? Four drives. All of them. This is unacceptable. I would personally suggest everyone to stay away from IBM until they get their act together. 8 hours a day... My goodness... (sorry, that statement still makes me shake my head).

What happened to those drives? As in, what broke, etc.? So did they repair it or replace it? 4 out of 4 is certainly unacceptable.. My drives are working fine, so I'm happy. Won't be needing to go out and buy any for another 6 months or so =)
They cross-shipped new drives to me. Actually, they were either new or refurbs. I can't tell the difference. Not that it matters. I sold one of them for $50, and I accidentally dropped the other one, so it's broken. :heh: The two 60GXPs are in my other computer right now as a RAID 0. It was starting to develope some errors in the outer tracks, so I partitioned out like 10GBs and it's working for now.
I decided to go SCSI for now and I have two Seagate X15 drives now.

IBM is just covering their ass so that the same lawsuits that came from the previous models won't happen with this line.

I've purchased 3 IBM Hard Drives - (1) 75GXP and (2) 60GXPs and they have all gone bad within 2 weeks. I wasted a lot of time troubleshooting a couple new systems with them installed and every time it was the IBM drive that was bad (I buy Maxtors and they work like a charm).
I refuse to purchase another IBM drive until they start paying me to use them.

I have NEVER had ANY problems with whatever IBM drive I have been using. PERIOD.
(And I have had around 15 different models through the years, including both 60/70GXP)

Do a google search on the words: IBM 75GXP LAWSUIT (or replace the word LAWSUIT with FAILURE) then be very afraid. I have one word for you: BACKUP!

But I NEVER needed to use that BACKUP because of bad HDrives -
only because of Windows fu..... up!!
But it SCARES me that so many people has dropped their drives on the flor!!
Learn to handle the HDs proper or get screwed!!
Besides, as a supporter in a big company, I´ve workeed a lot with IBM, WD, Maxtor etc. etc. and I must admit: It is NOT the drives from IBM which give me headaches. (No others mentioned, no others forgot...)

Well, since I had 2 45GB 75GXPs in raid-0, that would have been a lot of CDs. But, I did have ghost images of my 3 partitions on a "spare" 80GB WD drive. (Unfortunately, I made them on Jan 1-3. Fortunately, I was able to recover data from everything except the C:/WINDOWS folder.)

Just to add my plug nickel:
I have 2 75gxp's... My situation is this: I used to run my computer 24/7/365 until I had to move a little under a year ago. Shortly after moving (and seeing hw much higher my electricty bill was) I decided to turn the computer off during the day (I used to run a Q3 server ff of it...). Anyway.. Both of the drives gave me greif, until, you guessed it, I stopped running them all the time. No joke. I almost RMA'd one when I was having problems, but that was just about the time that I was settling in and I missed their 15 day window. The drives (knock on wood) seem to be fine now (and for the past 10 months). Odd... eh?
By now, if you have an older drive, then you probably know if you got a bad one. If you run yours 24/7 though, I'd suggest putting a fan on it. A big one...

Hey...how does one know if their drive is about to poop out? That would be nice to know in my drive decides to join its brethren.

Ouch. I am glad I got to mine before that happened. I pulled them when the clicking started freezing my system.

IBM has a Drive Fitness Test (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/technolo/dft/dftnew.htm) that you can download. It's supposed to have some "preventative" aspects.

I need to run that on my dead IBMs. It should cause an error code because they are messed up, but if not, I will make it so an error code does appear. ;) I need that for the RMA.

Ok Ok, you guys can say "I told you so" all you want..
I clicked over to my F drive (my raid 0 array, 2 75GB IBM drives), and well, I got into that fine. I try to get into several of my large folders, it says
F:\foldername is not accessible.
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
But I'm still able to read some of the other files. It was working just yesterday. I can't run that Drive Fitness Test on raid drives. AHHHHHHHH! What to do? Backing up things to my primary drive, which is also IBM.. oh boy

My computer is putting me through an emotional rollercoaster! WHY CANT THINGS JUST WORK!
Welp, while trying to access and move files, my system crashed (shortly after my post above). Reset the system, and WinXP did its own error checking (It wouldn't let me chkdsk myself, because it was RAID). It corrected the errors, deleted some junk, and fixed it back up. Now I'm able to access all the folders. aHHH.. Oh, these HD's are still on software RAID... Where are those WD HD's when ya need 'em!!

Ok, I hear the scratching again. It goes in intervals of 4, then pauses, then does another 4. Is this what you guys experienced with your IBM drives? aHHHH.. 120GB of stuff goin down the drain! :bawl:

That sounds like what happened to my 45G 75gxp when it failed. The sound was kind of like a ratchet - scritch...scritch...scritch...scritch.... pause....scritch...scritch...scritch...scritch...
By restoring to a spare drive and booting into safe mode (with the failed drive in raid 0, but not booting from the raid set) I was able to copy almost everything that I didn't have backed up off the failed drive. I found that the problem would occur only when I tried to access the folder where the drive had gone bad (which was C:\Windows when the raid set was the primary boot drive).

Yeah, thats whats happening to my RAID set. My two drives are in RAID 0, and isn't my primary boot. It just has my movies, mp3s, etc. on it. I'm able to look at the contents of the folders, but when I try to copy stuff out, or run the file, it starts with those sounds again.
Weirdly 'nuf, when I restarted my computer, the RAID card didn't detect my HD's, and something occured with the drivers, asking me to troubleshoot it. Tried updating the drivers, mines already the latest. It wouldn't let me update anyways. Uninstalled it, reinstalled, and still didn't detect. Put it in another slot, and now it detects my HD's again, but still the same ratchet sounds when trying to access it. Can I be saved?!?!
NuTs62 can't wait until his new non-IBM hard drives get there
I see that you guys have also experienced the scratch of death. Not a good sign. Back up what you can RIGHT NOW. :dodgy:

I *think* its only on one of my drives. I'd back up, but on to what? My 45GB is filled to the rim, and I have about 140GB of data on the 2 drives in the RAID. By the time I burned everything (approx over 280 cd's), then perhaps the WD drives might ship by then.
Hmmm, I should sue Dell.. Because I *depended* on them to deliver the drives. And they would expect some people to *depend* on the things they order from them. Its caused me emotional distress too! :P
Actually, it's not IBM's fault. It was all our faults for assuming the drive could be used for more than 8 hours a day. What were we thinking?

:P I hope ur jokin.. If they had prior knowledge of the drive having a maximum recommended usage per day, then they should've put a warning, or gave some sort of notice. If they failed to do this, and sold a faulty product, then they're liable. How am I to download all day if my hard drive can't even live that long? My other IBM drives still haven't had problems. *knock on wood*
