I also just heard about another Irish stout called "Beamish" which is supposed to be just as rich as Guinness but smoother, not sure how it measures up but you can see the reviews here:

Just a guess, but I think the reason is that California enacted laws about "promotional freebies" that breweries give away. The thought was that big breweries like Budweiser had so much money they could give away tons of free neon signs to bars, mugs and glasses to customers and such and it would be unfair competition to small microbreweries.

Yep, got mine a week or so ago. Used it at a punk rock show this weekend to open a beer for the lead singer of The Briefs, a great band whom I recommend you all check out.
