I have an 800 MHz Athlon Processor. I have a heatsink and 2 fans on it. I have two intake fans in the front of the computer and to exhaust fans in the rear, and a blowhole exhaust on top. I am using a Lian Li pc-71 Aluminum Server case. I also have two fans in my power supply and 2 fans on one of my hard drives. I want to overclock. How much do you think I can safely overclock this proc to, and also if you can give me some insight as to any other cooling things i should add and what kinda of speed i can get if i would add more cooling would be appreciated. THANKS!

It sounds like your good with cooling. And depending on whether you have a slot A or socket A CPU will determine how high you can OC it. Slot A CPUs have locked multipliers, which will only allow you to adjust the FSB and voltages (of course depending on your mobo too). Where the Socket A CPUs (most of em) have unlocked multipliers which means you can increase the multiplier which should allow for higher FSB speeds as well (if your mobo supports it).

There is a thing called a Gold Finger Device (GFD) that allows you to set multipliers on Slot A CPUs. They cost about $40 and require you to take the casing off the CPU to install it. This will allow for much higher speeds.

My current setup is a Slot A 800 and I am able to OC it to 860 with no problems. This is with 112 FSB and 1.75 Vcore.

how do you determine if you have a slot or socket? i have set it to 840 thus far and it works well.

Sockets are small squares ... slots look like cartridges.

i have a slot proc and an abit mobo that allows me to change the fsb ans stuff. i have it overclocked to 867 from 800. do you think i can go more than that, or anything else i should set?

How can you stand the noise from ALL those fans?????

I have a good set of ear plugs when I have my computer ON while I am sleeping (DL stuffs)! :D

I have a suggestion: Try some noiseless fans from PABST, and get rid of all those earplugs!!
As a musician, though, using music to īkillī the fan noise is OK with me :) (Well, Almost OK....)

on my computer i have 3 intake, 2 exauste, 2 on my hs, 1 on my case exterior near cpu blowing in, and i can overclock my amd athlon 1.4 safely to 1.65 with out any problems

Holy s... is that nescesary??????????????
To get a mere 250 MHz:bawl:
My Piii 500@667 does not need any xtras AT ALL!
(Boxed CPU, boxed fan....)

And to my knowledge the P4 Northwoods doesīnt either...

AMD has a problem yet to be solved :hmm: :hmm:

He said he had it at 1.65, maybe he hasnt tried anymore, or maybe he knows a little physics (more heat = less resistance = less proc life). Extra fans never hurt anyone. :P

Ok, Ok, But the noise!!!!

my sound system cost me about a grand, so it keeps those fans in check! :D

There all quiet fans. even the heat sink is a enermax extra quite hs, so the sound is to minimum. oh and i can over clock more. but i read that the more you overclock the less long your processor will live so... umm this may sound gay but i need this thing to last a while!

About the life being shortened you are correct and this is why. When you overclock the core gets hotter, (the very very center that is) that the fans can't get to. So the resistance is lowered, bla bla bla, and the proc doesnt last as long. Lots of fans do help b/c it keeps the outside of the proc cooler and the heat disapates outwards.

It may be true by overclocking it you are shortening the life of the cpu, but by the time it dies it'll be collecting dust in the back of your closet.
