3Com Cable Modem @Amazon Price Drop: $65.49 AR

Amazon has the 3Com 3CR29210 Cable Modem for $85.49 with a $20 rebate on top of it. A couple weeks ago, it was at $89.99.

I got one of these to avoid rental fees from the cable company. It works nicely on ATTBI's system here in the NW suburbs of Chicago, but there have been some stories of the modem's incompatibility with some systems.

3Com no longer manufactures this modem, and I've heard that support is almost non-existent, so caveat emptor.

stay away from this modem. I'm on comcast cable and it desync's from the system all the time. I don't know why this happens but it sucks. I sometimes lose connection about once a day. And then I have to call up comcast and get them to do a push to reset the link.

I've used this for over a month now using AT&Tbroadband and even connected it with my Linksys wireless Cable router and I have not encountered a single problem. My laptop receives almost the same speed as my desktop using wireless connection. I even use it with three different OS (2000, 98 & ME) using removable hardrive and I have no problem, and I only have to setup it once.

I added some items to make my order $99 for free shipping less promo of $20 that makes this modem less than $50, no tax. A bargain compared to other modems that's over $100.

Now I am just waiting for my rebate check. I hope they process it the same speed as their modem.

but its not like that for all cable modem service providers. some, like cox and roadrunner, still support it, and have no problems with it (comcast has to be "special" - bastards!). the best thing to do is to call up your local modem service tech support FIRST, verify what modems they DONT SUPPORT, and go from there.

LOL, hey chosenfool, wanna do a trade? if you still got the linksys. I just bought the motorola for my parents because I was sick and tired of this crap with the 3com. Comcast tells me that it'll take 24-48 hours before they get the new cable modem registered. heh.

In Pennsylvania, Comcast now supports the Linksys modem. The approval date was March 15th. All you have to do is call in the MAC address on the bottom of your Linksys modem and they'll provision it for you in a matter of minutes.

Comcast support told me to stay away from Toshiba modems for some reason.

well I went and bought the surfboard modem for my parents and they still said 24-48 hours before they could get online. rather than matter of minutes. Supposedly they're all backed up. I'm in PA, I've got comcast and I've got 2 accounts. Don't really need a 3rd modem. If you still want to trade, that shouldn't be a problem.

Linksys modems were approved by Comcast on March 15th. This information was gotten directly from Linksys (800) 326-7114 ask for Carlo Ceasar A. Rama or anyone that answers.

If you want to know what I really think happened is that Comcast didn't work out an agreement with Linksys until that date. Comcast was supposed to tell all customers with Linksys modems that their modem wouldn't work when in reality they just removed the provisioning until the deal was signed by Linksys.

I have proof of the above but would rather not say how I received it.

The price dropped again. Now it's $69.99 before rebate.

Still a good deal if you're on a system that supports it. Mine's been running just fine for almost 2 months-- hasn't lost a connection yet.

Thanks for the info. Enough time to PM w/ AMEX which if accepted and received my rebate would cost me only $30 which is even cheaper than ordinary modem. If this unit last me for at least 3 months (I've been using it for almost 2 months w/ no problem) then it pays for itself, considering that AT&T charges $10/month for using their modem.
