View Full Version : Neurosurgery Again

Almost exactly a year ago this week my mom had to have a brain tumor removed from the occipital region of her brain. The surgery went remarkably well and she healed far faster than expected. Actually she healed so well that she did not have to spend time in the ICU. She went straight from post surgery care to being released.
Well now a year later she is going to go into surgery again. This time it has become necessary to remove a tumor on her pituitary glan that has been causing her all sorts of hormonal disbalance problems. My parents made the appointment for the surgery this morning and the surgery will take place Friday morning @ 7AM. The surgery will be done by the head of pituitary surgery at UCLA medical center.
Please take a moment to pray that all goes well. The surgery is suppose to have a low risk factor but when you are messing around with the brain any risk factor is too high for comfort.
Thanks...
Our thoughts are with you. ;) :) ;)

You and your family are in my prayers. Please let us know how the surgery goes.
I'll have a chat with the big man and hope He listens. Best of luck to your mom. Keep us posted.

After her terrific success last year, I hope she does equally well and comes out without any problems. Fortunately, you are in one of the premiere Med centers in the country, and I know they will take great care of her. So many advances in neurosurgery makes it a much safer surgery than every before.
My prayers and good wishes are with you and your mom
I'll keep your family in my prayers. Please keep us updated.

Yup Loma Linda sure does, and a most excellent school too :D but the only pituitary specialist in the SoCal area that is qualified to do this surgery is at UCLA so that's where my mom is.
Well my dad just called probably 10 minutes ago saying she's entered surgery. The surgery should last about 3-4hours and hopefully I'll be able to get there around the time she's getting out. Funny thing is that the doctors said that if she wakes up feeling terrible then the surgery was a success, if she wakes up feeling excited and energetic then they might have to go in there again. The reason for that is because of the tumor on the pituitary her body is producing excess cortizone that keeps her flying high like a kite as soon as it stops producing the hormone she'll fall like a brick and be brought down to earth. It's going to take several months for her body to start producing cortizone on it's own again. So I'm hoping she wakes up depressed, groggy, and uncomfortable. Sounds bad but it's good :)

sounds like everyone is going to have to go out of their way to be really, really nice to her for a few months, no matter how hard it gets (and it probly will get hard...) and watch her carefully for signs of depression... but she'll be good as new in a few months. :)

Thank you everyone for your support. I'm expecting to celebrate my mom's grogginess (DF spelling?) soon. Well I am off.
I have to go to San Diego to drop off the motherboard, ram, and HSF for the server that will be added to RealGN today. Then I have to drive to UCLA to be with my dad. Thankfully my GF said she'd come with me so I won't have to do all the driving alone. Only about 300 miles I'll have to drive today.
I'll be sure to let you guys know asap when I find out how the surgery went. I'll bring the champagne to celebrate you bring the cake :)
I'm still in denial about this whole thing. I hope I'll be able to handle it when I see my mom lying in her bed with the IVs in her. During her last surgery I swore of ever studying medicine, I can't handle seeing my mom like that :(

What a relief that must be - I am so pleased your news was good!!
Of course, someone will have to ease her mind later so she doesn't think y'all were happy she felt so bad
Try and sleep - she will need you healthy and strong, and you will feel much better too
