Woman Doused With Gas, Set Afire
Ex-Boyfriend Booked With Attempted First-Degree Murder
NEW ORLEANS -- A New Orleans woman was fighting for her life Tuesday after being set on fire by her ex-boyfriend, who became enraged when he found her with another man, a New Orleans Police Department spokesman said.
The suspect, Charles Butler, 36, turned himself in Tuesday afternoon. He was booked with attempted first-degree murder.
The incident happened in the 10000 block of Curran Boulevard. Police said Butler recently had moved out of the home, but returned overnight to retrieve some of his belongings.
When Butler saw that the woman was not alone, he allegedly doused her with gasoline and set her on fire, NOPD spokesman Sgt. Joe Narcisse said. The woman's name is not being released.
"The victim and Butler recently broke up a relationship of several years," Narcisse said. "...We understand the new male friend was in the bedroom through the entire incident."
Police said after Butler fled, the other man called 911. The woman was rushed to Charity Hospital and then taken to a burn unit in Shreveport.
"We understand she has burns to 70 percent of her body," Narcisse said. "The prognosis is not good."
Police said there was no record of domestic disturbance in the home. Although Butler has never been arrested for a violent crime, he was convicted in 1993 for forgery.
