hard drive help

i have 2 hard drives, only 1 installed at the moment...trying to install the other. hd #1 is the one i had originally...but then i had computer problems. my friend tested out hd#1 and said its okay. so i thought i was my motherboard. well...i bought another hd, hd#2, installed it and it works. so i try 2 install hd#1 again and format it. it won't format...the formating stops in the middle somewhere.
i've had different opinions on this. some says to get a formatting prgm. another tells me that if it doesn't work through dos, then the hd is skrewed.
suggestions???

You can ask your friend to format it for you and then install it on your computer.

nope it won't format. that's y he suggested i get a format software prgm. but someone else said i didnt need to.

well then I'm guessing that something is crapped out in the drive. Did you try scandisking and repairing bad sectors?
