I am finally (slowly) entering the world of low-end home theatre with my new Toshiba 36" TV with component inputs. I actually have 2 DVD players with component out (along with a Gamecube that I can get a component cable, and may be adding an Xbox and/or PS2 with component).

Are component cables exactly the same as "normal" RCA cables? I see that special component cables cost a lot more than normal RCAs, is there a reason to use one over the other?

Also, are there any reasonably priced component-input switchers, and/or can I use normal RCA switchers? (to select different input sources)

Hope these aren't stupid questions! :)

They tend to be higher quality, and the RCA connectors must be 75ohm.

I have been using a Radio Shack passive RCA switch box for my component switching. Component signals do require a higher bandwidth, but for short distances a PASSIVE RCA switch box will work. I have my PS2 and Xbox switched with a box and have noticed very very little image degradation. Cost: $29.99

Shop smart, shop S-Mart.

I tried a 3-ft plain ol vanilla RCA cables as component video cables and compared it to Monster and Radio Shack. Component cables didn't have the slight distortion that I saw with RCAs, must be the shielding or something. No difference I could tell between Radio Shack and Monster, so save yourself $40.

Also, something you have to take into account:

Longer the cable, the higher the quality you need to buy.

I think the Radio Shack cables are actually made by Acoustic Research, so technically it's not a generic brand. Pretty nice stuff for the money.
