I don't but I am thinking about it. Nobody can ever get through to me at home when I'm on the Internet; and I don't want to add another phone line.

I'll be losing mine (along with my job) fairly shortly... I'll miss the free long distance!!!:bawl:

If its getting through to your home that you're worried about, get DSL, or those devices/programs which allow you to surf on the net, and still be able to receive calls =)

My high school daughter doesn't have a cell phone, although she has been trying hard to change that (but to no avail).

I've got a cell phone.

But I turned around and whacked our land line. No regular telephone anymore. Cell phone only.

It's kinda nice. I don't give the number out except to friends and family. And I never show up in the phone book.

That means no telemarketers, or at least not many. I haven't had a single one in 6+ months.

<whining>"but dad, really, i need a cell phone. everyone has one. and besides, they're good for safety, like if i'm stuck somewhere and need you to come pick me up. you wouldn't want me trying to walk to a payphone in the middle of the night, would you dad?!? please!!!"</whining>

;) kinda like that markel?

Verizon DSL is my only option and I'm at 17,000 feet from the main terminal, so that's not an option.
Cable is not available yet in my area, so that's not an option.
I tried Pagoo and Call-something-or-other and I had a lot of conflicts with my computer-the computer would freeze quite often. Plus most people don't want to go through the hassle of logging on just to call you, and they lose the information on how to call you when you're online. So I either get another line or get a cell phone, from what I can figure.

I have one but I never use it. I think they're retarded unless you really need to get a hold of someone like on a road trip or a long drive. If i'm just going to class or out somewhere, calls can wait.

Ditto here. I usually feel like I'm wasting money on it, but when I do use it, it always seems well worth it. There is really no substitute when you are on the road.

I did the same thing Jase did. I got a cell phone with a really cheap plan instead of a land line (cheaper that way). I use it just like a land line and almost never take it with me when I go anywhere. :D

man, people who gab on their cell phones all the time used to annoy the hell out of me, but now i'm one of them.
for me, i just really like having the convenience that i can do two things at once -- shop for groceries and talk, for example. and since i'm home so rarely, i give my cell # to some people so they can reach me during the day.

but i've very much found that my cell phone is like the internet -- i didn't used to have either one, but now that i've gotten used to having either of them, i get cranky if my access is taken away.

If you have call waiting (or can get it) check out a device called "Hotcall" (look on eBay or Buy.com). It's connected between your phone jack and modem. It detects the "call waiting" signal, and alerts you to an incoming call. You can either pick up the phone and talk, or ignore them. If you pick up the phone and it's a telemarketer (or just someone you don't want to talk to) hang up within 15 seconds and you'll stay on-line. We used it for a few years. Really nice.

No software to install. Works with Windows, Linux, Mac, TRS-80, Commodore 64, KIM-I, Adam-12, Car-54, Hawaii-50, etc.

I have one and I use it all the time because of the free nights and weekends. If it wasn't for the cellphone I'd be paying a lot of $$/month just making phone calls to friends, and plus it's quite convinient to have when you're going somewhere. My mom can call me and tell me to get home ASAP because our new dog has just spontaneously combusted, you know.. things like that.

Oh and I get news headlines too!! Well, half of the headlines at least such as "New Middle East peace treaties are currently underway lead by the..." and "Today stocks raced upwards due to the surprising news made by the feds regarding..."

can't beat it.

My land phone broke and im too cheap to buy another so my cell has become the primary phone.

I only have a cell phone (Sprint PCS). I've had it almost 5 years. As soon as they went to plans with long distance included, I dropped my regular phone service. The computer uses a cable modem, so everything is covered.

I have two. My Motorola v60t for AT&T and my Motorola i90c for Nextel. I use Nextel primarily for the two-way radio.

I personally don't have one and haven't had one for work in almost 3 years. I have been considering it lately, but I'm not fond of starting yet another monthly bill. If anything, I'll make sure my company pays for it since it is highly likely that my company will try to get a hold of me on it (I'm on-call a lot).

i've never had one and i don't want one. i've funtioned fine for 22 years of my life with a phone at home and an answering machine. if i'm out of the house, i'm doing something and don't wanna be interrupted. i'm not a sports agent, FBI/DEA agent, nor some big executive, so no one NEEDS to get a hold of me RIGHT NOW. anything can wait. as far as long distance goes, i find onesuite.com to be cheaper (2.9cents/minute) for my needs. i think $20-50 per month for a conviniece is excessive. my parents have offered several times to get me one. thanks, but no thanks. when i NEED to make a call from outside my home, there are these invative things called "pay phones." i use them as i need them, and they are only $.50.

True.. but I'd always like to stay on the safe side. If I'm involved in a car accident, and need to call a tow truck, or someone to pick me up, a cell phone would be convenient. There may not be a pay phone for miles, who knows. Lets say for you guys, if your wife or girlfriend is in labor, and you're out having lunch.. How would she be able to contact you? True, it is costly.. And everyone seems to be jabbering on it nowadays.. But its just a nifty tool of convenience. In some situations, it can save lives too.. but i won't get into that.. :P

That's basically why I got one last year. A year ago Feb actually. When I was moving from CA to Las Vegas I picked it up so friends and family could get in contact with me while we were in transition. Also free long distance. We call mom and dad in IL, mom and dad in Reno, kids can call their dad in CA and doesn't cost us any more than our plan. Which is way less than it would be on a land line.

I do either need a new phone or batteries for my phone. My battery life really sucks.

um, in CA there are call boxes on the freeway. and in any case, if the CHP shows up (which they usually do), they can get you to a phone. plus, i'm not married, so no one going into labor better call me. cell phones are too expensive monthly to say you need it for an emergency. i mean, the least someone would spend is $20/months for a basic plan, right? that's AT LEAST $240 a year. that ain't convinient in the least for me. not to mention that they have cell phones with "emergency only" plans or one-time use phones. if it's really for emergencies then people don't need all the minutes and such.

Ha! I pulled that line on my parents and somehow it worked <over time that is...a loooooong time>. I guess all those nights of calling home collect in the middle of the night finally got to them. Either that or the bill's added up.

I finally caved and got one. I did it for some of the reasons mentioned here. I use it as a second line so people can get through when I am online. That was turning into a major issue...

It has the added benefit of unlimited free long distance on nights and weekends so it has more than payed for itself for me. My LD bill used to be around $150 a month. Now it is down to about $20 plus my phone bill. And I have the added benefit of a cell phone. I have also turned into one of those obnoxious people who talks on their cell at the gym, grocery store.

I am now debating weather keeping OnStar is going to be worth the price...

I have a cellphone because I decided that paying 30-40 bucks for basic home phone service is a ripoff. In LA, you may be calling within the same area code but they charge you local toll. So at the end of the month, I'm paying a minimum of 50-60 dollars just to have a land line so that telemarketers can bug the living daylights out of me. Thanks but no thanks.
I pay a flat fee of 55 bucks a month for 4000 minutes with long distance included and get the flexibility to take my phone anywhere I go and I don't have to deal with telemarketers. Makes life easier.
I do agree that most college kids and younger don't NEED a cell phone. But its more like a luxury really. I just recently got a cell phone (1-2 years ago). Went through high school, undergrad and grad school without one just fine. But when you're in the working world and friends aren't always in the same town, its nice to have a free long distance plan.
