One of this week's specials is the Cendyne 24x 10x 40x CD-RW (product 2007-6846). It's $99.99 less a $40 mail in rebate. If you use one of the following coupons for $25 off a $100 purchase (0221 and 0315)(yes, you'll need to find those infamous paperclips :) )the total cost drops to $35 (plus tax of course) with free shipping!

Only kicker is that this deal is not available on-line. That's right you will need to deal with an actual live person on the phone - get over it.

To order call 800-283-7674

Oh, and for the completely uninitiated, here's a link to the mail in rebate form.

Can I infer from the price that this is not a burn-proof CDRW drive?

CenDyne and Lite-On
CenDyne is a relatively new company on the scene. Established in 1999, and located in Santa Ana, California, CenDyne has experienced large growth as a Value Added Retailer in the technology industry. However, as such they do not build the drive being reviewed here. This unit is made by the well known optical drive manufacturer Lite-On.

Lite-On is a popular manufacturer of optical drives of various kinds. While not as well known to most computer owners as HP or Sony, they have a long track record of producing reliable and affordable devices. Established in 1995, Lite-On now has business agreements with such giants as JVC, as well as large production facilities in China. They are the number one optical drive manufacturer in Taiwan and in the top three worldwide.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Inside the Drive
Constant Linear Velocity

The CenDyne/Lite-On drive uses Constant Linear Velocity to ensure an even and consistent burn rate. Although the drive is rated at 24X burn speeds on blank CD-R media, it actually burns at a variable rate that is dependent on the track location that is actually being written. Speeds can vary from as low as 16X to the maximum rated speed, and are handled logically by the drive; this capability is capitalized on by Smart Burn technology.

Smart Burn Technology

Smart Burn, or Smart Monitoring & Adapting Recording Technology for Burning, is Lite-On's version of buffer under-run protection. It is similar to BurnProof, created originally by Sanyo, but is more capable and updated to meet the demands of faster operating CD-R and CD-RW drive units. Smart Burn recognizes the quality and capability of media in the drive and adjusts the speed accordingly to ensure a quality burn, as well as ensuring that the throughput never exceeds the built-in cache; a failure in either area typically results in a badly burned disc, (i.e. a "coaster.")
