Diners handed rare meat forms
17 March, 2002 03:33 GMT
LONDON (Reuters) - Some restaurants are forcing customers who like their meat rare to sign a disclaimer form before eating due to fears of E-coli and salmonella poisoning.
The Sunday Times said restaurants including food chains Planet Hollywood, All Bar One and Shoeless Joe's were prepared to serve rare hamburgers, sausages or minced beef only if diners complete forms giving up rights to take legal action.
People eating minced beef which is pink in the middle are much more likely to be poisoned by E-coli or salmonella.
The new practice has been blamed on advice from the government's food safety watchdog saying that minced meat should only be served when it is well-done.
The warning does not apply to ordinary steaks, because they only carry bacteria on the outside and this is killed by cooking.
Egon Ronay, the restaurant critic, attacked the disclaimers: "I don't know where it will all stop -- soon you might have to fill in a huge form before setting foot in a restaurant."

This is about ground beef guys, not steaks. It's OK to eat steaks undercooked. I love my steaks bloody. However, ground beef should always be cooked to at least medium-well because its processing allows contaminants to enter. Trust me, I used to cook steaks for three years at a "restaurant". 155 degrees at the center to kill all of the baddies.

I usually get my beef medium rare, although I have had steak tartar and some japanese thing (sorry, can't remember the name), which is basically raw meat. IMO, once beef gets past a certain temperature, it loses a lot of tenderness and flavor. Besides, a little e coli is good for you.

After the book I just read, it doesn't seem like a bad idea. Anyway, I like steaks med. rare, but hamburgers must be all the way cooked.

Mmmm... Blood...
Love steaks rare/medium rare. I personally think it's better to get bloody steaks because if part of the steak is messed up, you can see just by looking at it. Can't really tell on a well done steak if they used old meat. Burgers I like well done, though. Even I'm not that nuts. :P

:stupid: i hate when ya gotta struggle just to cut the meat. And if gets too tough, its more chewy than anything.

No, No, No! I will not eat meat if it still has blood. Ewwww! :puke: It just seriously grosses me out. Dunno why...
Hamburgers have to be cooked (I usually ask for medium well, because that takes the pink out but doesn't make them burned. :) ). Steaks the same. I don't want any red and a LITTLE pink is ok, but... I am not a huge steak fan anyway. It has to be cooked really well for me to like it. (Seasoned well, etc.). (I know, I know. I'm going to hell for not liking steaks! ;) )

It's got to be cooked long enough to cover up the marks left where the jockey was whipping it.
