. Western Digital 120 GB 7200 RPM ATA/100
. Maxtor 120 GB 5400 RPM ATA/133

Which would perform better in a non-RAID setting? My bet's on the Western Digital, but i'm not positive

Also, anyone know if these (120-160 GB) hard drives require anything special to be compatible with PII/III systems, like boot-sector software, or can they easily be auto-detected by older systems? (i.e. Generally speaking, are there any limitations of the BIOS associated with PII/III, like the old 8.4 GB limitation?)

I would think the 7200RPM hard drive would outscore the 5400RPM hard drive!

The WD would work better.

The WD for sure -

IDE drive speed needs to be about 10-12k before it even takes full advantage of ATA-66. The difference between ATA100 & 133 essentially means nothing until drive rotational speeds get higher. Sorry I don't have a link that goes into detail about this, but I remember that this was a big issue when ATA66 first appeared.
