Over at techbargains.com then have a linky to pricematch
a HD on sale at Best Buy. It's a WD 7200 RPM 120 gig that goes
for $300 and then minus $100 rebate. Pricematch with this site
http://www.shentech.com/wesdigwd12ud1.html

and it'll be around $100

OK, this needs a little more explanation.
You need an AMEX card to do this.

1) go to best buy and get this drive for $299
http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11092115&m=488&cat=511&scat=512
Make sure you use you're AMEX card.

2) Send in $100 rebate to Best Buy.

3) Take your receipt and pricematch it thru AMEX using this site.
http://www.shentech.com/wesdigwd12ud1.html
( It is $209 at this site )
So AMEX will send you $90

Actual price is $299 - $100 - $90 = $109

Of course you'll need to pay tax on $299 at best buy.

It's a good deal but there's also a lot of work involved.

My total at BestBuy.com is $325.96... which means even after the 100 Rebate and 90 Pricematch, my total is $135.9.. that's a lot higher than $100 :\..

so for me the Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 120GB 7200rpm 8mb Buffer HD for $188 Shipped at Dell might be better worth my money.

I think i'm going to do that.

hey even buy.com has the Special Edition Version, w/8MB cache for only 205: http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10316960

So should we wait?

Virtually all of the American Express Charge (all the optimas except blue are excluded) Cards have the Best Value Guarantee (aka pricematch, etc).

Those of you with Gold, Platinum, and Centurion charge cards are similarly eligible for the best value guarantee. Consult americanexpress.com to verify that your card has the feature.

FYI.

On today main apex/deals page,
"They do NOT calculate tax and shipping into this. This often works to your advantage, like in this case. "

Can someone explain to me this?

Cost to you: $299.99 - $90 pricematch - $100 rebate = $109!!

But I have to pay

$299.99+tax/shipping - 90 -100 > $109

Tks

Yes, it's going to be $109 + (tax on $299). I'm not sure what Apex means by "This often works to your advantage, like in this case" because I've never seen paying tax as an "advantage". :dodgy:

Edited: to clarify tax on which amount

I think what Apex means is that once you pay the full price with tax and shipping that factors into the difference. So you pay $299 + tax + shipping and then they take that total and take the difference directly from $209. Which makes your savings bigger. It's like free shipping and no tax.

Can you do that at a Best Buy B&M? I don't think they honor web site price matches. Anyone know for sure? I would just print out the website and taken it there then. $209 + tax - $100 rebate = $109 about. No waiting for a check and calling AMEX up. :P

i know that in the past when i pricematch they DO NOT figure in tax. ie, i just pricematched an audigy that i bought for $99.99+tax and found for $74.99. i got a check for $25. however, all of mine have been b&m purchases, so it may be different if you order it online.

I have always been asked for the pre-tax, pre-shipping cost of the item... they never let me figure shipping and tax into the PM... maybe it depends who you talk to? They seem pretty loose about what they pay... or it depends on what state you're in?

What usually happens is that a place that has the cheaper price reams you on shipping and handling charges. The nice thing about the Amex BVG is that when you pricematch, they pricematch only the actual cost of the item. If they wanted to, they could consider the total cost of actually buying the item at the cheaper place, which would include the cost of shipping and tax, and you would get less money back. Amex will never take into consideration tax and shipping no matter who you talk to.

If this isn't clear, let's take an example:

Store A has a computer for $500 + $100 shipping/tax = $600 total
Store B has the same computer for $350 + $150 shipping/tax = $500 total

You buy from store A and pricematch with store B. If Amex took shipping/tax into consideration, you would get $600 - $500 = $100 back with a total cost of $500. Since they don't take those into consideration, you get $500 - $350 = $150 back with a total cost of $450. Thus, you save $50 this way.

Of course, this isn't always true, but then if it isn't, why didn't you buy at the cheaper place in the beginning?

I accidentally went to Shentech's site today (going through my history and hit the wrong link) and saw that Shentech is now selling the 120gb drive for $199, instead of $209! I immediately called Amex and the lady was very nice and said that I could append my old price match-- I had to give her the original claim number, and she added a note I would be faxing a new price, and said there would be no problem!

I know it's not a huge price drop, but another $10 on this deal is really nice!
