Alright folks....I'm looking for a new guitar.

I'm a folky style/jazz type of player.

I know that Taylor is AWESOME....but a little bit out of my price range.

Takamine (it's what I have now) is also some I would like to have....but what else would you guys suggest?

edit: Forgot to add that I would like it to be a cutaway...:)

Thx!

Not sure if you want an accoustic or an electric.

I have a guild like this (http://www.guildguitars.com/gear/gear.php?partno=3803606). I like it. It's a thin body accoustic. So I can have a decent accoustic sound but it's really meant to be plugged in.

A friend of mine has this one (http://www.guildguitars.com/gear/gear.php?partno=3608000). That has a much more jazzy feel.

There's also Ovation. I have an older celebrity model (low line). It's my work horse. I've had that for about 8 years. Laminate top, but still has a very rich tone. They have cutaway electric accoustics that are more economical. The only downer is the plastic bowl they use for a back. It can be difficult to get used to. But it's also harder to put dings in.

I bought my guild about 5 years ago for about $700 new. The archtop may cost a lil more. Low end ovations are in the $300-600 range (guessing).

Hope this helps. :D

:stupid:

btw, nice guild, hoey.

i play my nylon string for jazz and classical. i just like that tone. i use my hamer double cutaway for blues and jazz, and of course rock/alternative/whatever. sounds nice with my sears tube amp.

doh! Sorry...I forgot to put acoustic or electric....my bad!

I'm an acoustic type person...:D

Ovations are cool...but I don't like them very much. I don't know why...I don't like the sound. It sounds...wierd? And I kinda don't like the feel of the round back against me...also wierd. :)

so you like nylon or steel strings? dobro or dreadnaught?

...actually, what was the question? i mean, it's kinda hard to pick guitars for someone else. last time i did that, i just pretended that i was shopping for myself and got her the one i wanted :P

just be sure you get one with low action, solid top, etc. other than that you gotta pretty much try them all out and see what you like n stuff. i mean, you can't go wrong with a good martin or something...but it's highly personal.

yeah, i have an ovation - blah..
sounds good plugged in but...
yeah..
i have celebrity deluxe - paid bout 500 for it...
gotten use out of it..
has 2 big cracks in the laminate
still sounds the same :P

anyways...
so, your price range is 750ish?

well...there are some higher end takamine's that are pretty nice. That santa fe model...mmmmm, pretty sweet..

you could also look that lower end martins...
http://www.mguitar.com/
pretty good interactive guitar catalog
and the price list there is the retail price list..
but you know...retail prices...HA! :-)
you should be able to find about 200 cheaper

another brand my friends really like are larrivee's
played them a little, and they definitely sound really nice...
they only have a few models that are under 1000, but yeah, pretty good stuffs - oh, and their manufacturing thing is kinda annoying..
their plant will only manufacture one model at a time, and as orders come in for a different model, they switch...
so sometimes, it can be a couple months wait till they start building the guitars that you want....
but check them out.

and finally, you should look into seagulls..
they're called the poor man's taylor. and they're really nice imo.
and definitely heckavalot cheaper than taylors.

hmmmm....one of my favorite topics: guitars

re: ovations.
i'm a big fan, but NOT of the celebrities. they have a very high, tinny sound, especially when unplugged. however the balladeers and legends are (imo) very nice-sounding guitars with great action (i love the necks on them, expecially the custom balladeers).

re: seagull
i definitely recommend these. for the $$ you pay, i think you are getting about the best guitar possible. very well made, extremely nice woods (both from a quality and tone standpoint), and a good, rich sound. all of them are handmade in canada and are quality instruments.

re: larivee
very nice guitars, but they've always been out of my price range.

another "folky" guitar that i really like is the
Martin 000C-15E (http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/000C15E4.htm). it is all mahogany, has a fishman pickup/preamp/eq installed, and can be had for $825 w/ case included. it is just a joy to play, especially when fingerpicking, and i love the sound of it. mmmmmm.....if i had $800 laying around, i'd buy one of those in an instant.

one of these in black would be just

that's the vigier arpege, folks. from the vigier website:
This advanced and exclusive concept revolving around the recent developments in carbon fiber technology has allowed us to produce a "neck through body" system where taking the place of the traditional metal truss rod is only 10% carbon fiber surrounded by 90% French maple. Our breakthrough is the result of a new formula that produces a denser, more concentrated blend of carbon fiber that allows us to use far less of the material. For guitar players, this means the natural feel of French maple combined with all the obvious benefits of carbon fiber technology. Vigier instruments utilizing the 10/90 Neck System are lightweight and moreover have the strength, stability, sustain, and lack of dead spots that you wouldn't expect to find in a conventional wooden neck design.

that is http://www.vigierguitars.com/

but my oops...those are solid guitars :P

Steel strings (a light string...heavy strings sound too muffled for me)

dreadnaught would be what I would want.

And since I really don't have a real job yet as I'm still in college, I would say 600-800 would be my price range.

Maybe I'll just get new strings for my guitar....makes it sound like a new guitar...:D Choices choices....:)

mojo - Have you ever played with flat strings? Those are the BOMB! The lower four strings (lower notes I mean) are more oval than round. Your fingers can just glide on those strings!

True that! :)

I wish I could play a whole set though....all I can do is play individual things...like snare, or bass drum...:)
