View Full Version : Getting a new computer tomorrow, what files do I need to copy over?

I'm getting my new computer tomorrow, and I'd like some pointers on moving files/sw from my old one to the new one. I think I'll just burn a few CDs of the old stuff and move it, but I'd like some advice on what files I should make sure to transfer...

I have all my original CD's so I'll just reinstall the SW, but are there any files I should make sure to copy over? So far I can think of...

TurboTax tax returns
Quicken QDATA
Outlook .pst files
IE bookmarks (where are these stored?)

Anything else?

Your bookmarks would be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\dbax791\Favorites

This is assuming your login on the computer was dbax791, substitute your real login name.

I'd copy my entire "My Documents" folder over.

Hmm...I don't seem to have a "Documents and Settings" folder...still on Win 98, but I did find it under "Windows\Favorites".

If you are getting a new computer... are you gonna partition it so that you can separate your data files from your system files?

If so... then the next time you need to "move your data", they will all be neatly stored together and then you can grab them all at one time, without having to worry about missing any.

This also comes in handy for situations where you hose the computer and have to reinstall your OS.

That makes sense, but I don't know how to do it, and frankly it frightens me! :eek:

Is it fairly straightforward, or do I need special SW? And would I need to preallocate space for each drive? I'm not sure I'd want to do that...

When installing your operating system use fdisk to partion. Use format to format the hard drive with your file system of choice. And yes you allocate space for each partion.
