Raised Lutheran.

But I'd consider myself agnostic now.

Religion as an organization/institution has let me down one too many times, and hasn't shown me enough to believe in to counteract those letdowns.

So now I'm perfectly happy to keep my beliefs (or non-beliefs) to myself. No need to find a bunch of people who share them just so we can all pat each other on the back.

I guess I am "religious" in most people's understanding of the word. That word is kind of a "bad word" in my church and those that are similar.

The word "religious" to us alludes to a devotion to a system of belief, rather than a relationship with a loving, caring and active God.

For example, our church has no formal membership. We forsake all denominational hierarchies and formal creeds, trusting solely in the Holy Spirit as our overseer and the Bible as our statement of belief. And if you're wondering: yes, I believe everything in the Bible, including the 6-day creation.

Be sure to join us for services on Sunday morning, with a potluck and small-arms weapons training afterwards!

Raised Roman Catholic and survived Catholic grade school, high school and college. My HS and College were run by the Jesuits - I liked their style and that's why I didn't go to a public University. I also met my wife in College so she's Catholic too.

I still keep to the Irish Catholic traditions like the Lenten abstinance of meat on Fridays (not just Good Friday). My grandmother never ate meat on Friday - period. Apparently Lent just wasn't enough for her.

My mom's a Catholic and my dad's Jewish, and both are lapsed, so I didn't have much of a chance.

That is the way it used to be for all Catholics year round -- no meat on Friday. Come to think of it...why was that such a big sacrifice anyway?

I'm Seventh Day Adventist...it's a great religion...you guys should find a church close by you and visit sometime. This Christian religion meets on Sat...and is a good way to relax and grow closer to God.

in a non-mystical way, yes. i believe in joy, self-improvement, being good, actively helping others, and leaving your corner of the planet better than the way you found it. i don't believe in soulmates, eternal rewards or punishments, or area 51.

"no sir, i don't like it"

i was raised catholic like my bros and sis and like folks and their siblings and so on. somehow or another, i was given a choice to go to another public school in the area or continue the catholic. maw & paw couldn't afford to force me to go, but they'd ante-up if'n i wanted to stay put. but i opted for the public school instead.

it was funny. you should see the look on public school students' faces if you stand up and ask, "May I please be excused" instead of, "Hey, I gotta go to the can, man!"

anyway, i haven't found much in any religion that i don't find in my own efforts and the people i surround myself with.

You gotta be kidding. For me, that would be a very very big sacrifice.

As for my religious associations, both my parents are buddists. I was raised buddist. I'm agnostic. I know someone's out to get me, but have no idea who. I try to live my life so that I can look at myself in the mirror long enough to shave, and that's it. When I go, who I see... that's who I'm kissing up to. If he/she/what is pissed off that I waited so long, that's their perogative. :D

The funny part was how accurate it is. I'm Catholic and I'm considering a conversion to Greek Orthodox. They nailed it that time.

I'm not really religious. How can there be soo many gods to believe in. IF you believe in one religion, then there is another religion that says you are going to hell if you don't believe in that religion. But, the religion that you are currently believing says you won't go to hell if you believe in it.

I belive what I can see, because I know for a fact that it is real.

If I did have some strong scense of feeling that somthing is there that I cannot see, well then maybe I would consider it, but it isn't happening.

i agree with you. but since this was a "religion" thread, i went with the flow. personal faith is much different from an organized religion. personal faith can be helped by an organized religion, but i think that the lack of personal faith and relationship with God is what makes a lot of organized religion and sects so whacked out. just my opinion tho.

(I had a thought of using the "I'm with stupid" smiley, but in this case I think I'll pass.) Sorry to come in a bit late on this thread (after a nice getaway weekend for my wife and I), but I couldn't pass up on this one. I am in total agreement with what kb0wwp stated above. There are many (over the past 2000 years) who look to the Bible as God's "handbook" for us and come to the same conclusions. And what is amazing (but then, it really isn't so amazing) is that in totally different cultures around the world there are ones that arrive at almost the same convictions (without having someone else "tell them what to believe").

Cantacuzene
04-01-2002, 08:56 AM
I guess you could say I'm the opposite of that. I go by the Bible and all, but I don't believe in the science aspect of it at all. Also I value the official Creed very high. The Nicean Creed of the First Ecumenical Council in the 3rd century sums up best the Christian belief in my book, as it has done for the past 1700 years. I don't like to disagree with the findings of the Church fathers too much because many of them were Saints or at least special people and much more learned about theology than any people alive today, so it seems presumptuous to contradict them, especially being they all read the original Greek bible in the original form, without any filters or translation, which is something very few people today can claim.

Markel
04-01-2002, 09:15 AM
Cantacuzene, just to be clear, those of us who do not identify with any creed are not saying that we necessarily disagree with what they say. There are many of the creeds where I am in full agreement with what they state (and then there are some that I have some problems with some parts). However, where I agree with the creeds is where they are in agreement with the Bible. The problem is that any brief statement or list of beliefs is going to fall short of everything that the Bible has to say. So, in my case (and likely kb0wwp as well), we take the Bible as our "doctrinal statement". :)

Cantacuzene
04-01-2002, 09:24 AM
I wasn't saying either of us were right or wrong I was just pointing out differences between us. I love how simple and at teh same time complex religion is, where we can have the same core of beliefs and such vastly different aproaches.

I used to work with a guy that spent years learning to read Greek and Hebrew so he could read the Bible in the original texts. It was really quite amazing, he could translate on the fly as he read it out-loud. I guess everybody's got to have a hobby.

well, i was raised (and currently am) a Seventh-day Adventist. however, i'm probably a little more open-minded than the average SDA, due at least in part to spending a lot of time in public schools.

i'm pretty strongly of the opinion that people need to follow their beliefs, but i think it's very hard for me to crap on someone else's beliefs if i wasn't raised in the same way they were.
