Dunno if this is the exact right forum, but I've noticed since I've gotten my new computer yesterday my cable connection is SCREAMING. Not sure if its something with the HW/SW or just the fact it's Easter and not too many people online. I've had it for 3 mos and never beat 1.4 mbps, and usually get about 1mbps, but today I hit 2.1. I thought that 1.5 was about the upper limit for cable modems? Is there something in the computers HW/SW that could affect this?

I regularly get 2kbps, and that is my cap. The modems are capable of much more.

Yeah, I saw the "cap" thing discussed in the OT forums...what exactly is this?

You are limited to the amount of upload and download bandwidth you have by the cable company. Mine is set to max out at 250KB/sec (~2kbps) download and 45KB/sec upload. In a way I like being capped becuase if it wasn't, then I would actually feel a slowdown when a bunch of people are online. It can get really bad if there are bandwitdh hoggers (me! :D). So, if it is capped they can (and have) garuntee that you will get that speed.

usually whenever you have a fresh registry, the connection is a LOT faster. After a few months of use, you can expect a bit of a slow down. Though im not sure how or why, but the registry gets mucky and cluttered after a while, and that somehow affects the speed. Ive seen this happen everytime i have a new and fresh install.
That is strange, but then there are registy settings that you can do to "optimize" your speed. I don't know how a "cluttered" registry would affect that as long as those setting stay the same. But, if that is what you get, then that is what you get.
