okay...i've been looking to buy a new TV...
and I'm looking more and more at the Sony Wega...
I can't afford the XBR...so I was looking at buying the regular 36 inch...I've seen it in ranges from 1199 to 1299...
now here is the question...
JVC, Panasonic, and Toshiba ALL have 36 inch flat screens for almost the same price...all these TV's look nice!? Which one to get?
any opinions would be much appreciated...thanks...

My vote is to panasonic. They make excellent sets.
Bah, for $100 more, I'd get a Panasonic AE100 digital projector! Nothing beats front projection.

BTW, Apex, what do you think is the best price/performance digital projector?

Honestly, I used to drool over the Mitsubishi 40" direct view TV, but currently I am very happy with my 56" Toshiba (which I scored for around $1,400. :hihi: )
Come on, DF... Yours is ONLY 56"? :hmm:
But seriously, I don't think the screens are that expensive, and I believe--I'd have to ask--that the Sharp a friend of mine bought came with a 60" screen. Besides, you can't say that a home theater doesn't sound like a good idea! :D

Matters what price range you're looking at. I just picked up a Proxima DP8000, and it works very well for what I bought it for. I figure I'll use it for a year or two and sell it for at least what I bought it for. $0 out of pocket rocks. HP is coming out with 2 great ones, and Compaq has a good one as well, OEM's by Optoma.
In terms of a screen, you can get pretty good quality (ie. better than rear view TV) with a $30 Parkland Plastics 5'x10' panel. Of course, if you go with a specialized screen there's no comparison.

Well, I'm just looking for now, but I'd say between 2 and 5K. I haven't seen very many for less than $2,000 that are worth it.

Thanks, that looks really good. I was hoping to find one with atleast 1500 Lumens. All of the cheaper ones I've found only had 1000 Lumens.
Make sure you watch at least 1 full movie with it or a similar DLP projector before buying it to make sure you don't get headaches and rainbows don't bother you too much.

I mentioned earlier that I've used a Sharp projector. I've also used another brand, but I can't remember which one. I didn't notice any rainbows or headaches on either... :hmm:
Thanks for the fore-warning though. I just don't know where I'd go to test out a projector; none of the local electronics stores carry them.

Which sharp projector did you use?
I'm personally pretty wary about DLP projectors because of the rainbows. If I have a superbowl party or something and even 1 person gets headaches from them, it's a big waste. But I got to admit, for the money, nothing matches DLP's performance.
The DP8000 that I have has:
3000 lumens
800:1 on/off contrast
3 LCD with MLA technology
Silicon Image DVDO scaler/processor
<34dB of noise
13.2lbs
Since I'm using it in a room with poorly controlled ambient lighting, it works pretty well. :)

I don't really remember the model, but it couldn't have been more than 1500 Lumens (it could only give a crisp picture in low lighting). Plus, it was small and easily portable.
Anyway, we used it to show some movies to about 100 teenagers, and none of them complained about headaches. Of course, most of them fell asleep during the Big Lebowski (sp?). :hmm:
