View Full Version : more problems with my idsl - home networking...please help

So, I got idsl - and with it, I had to get one of their 'special' routers. (efficient networs 5800 series)

Now...

they put the jack way up in my living room...
but I'm going to have 2 computers in my bedroom...

So, I'm running a cable from my living room to my bedroom...
to get 2 computers in my bedroom though, I'm using my old dsl routper - smc barricade.

so, I set up the barricade to just get the ip addres using dhcp.
is there any easy way to do a whole bunch of file sharing between the computers

Also, I'd like to put vnc on one of the computers behind the barricade and have it accessible from the outside..
is that doable as well?

File sharing is the easy part - if every machine is getting an IP from the router, they're all on the same network. If you have problems getting them to see each other, just put them all in the same workgroup & install netBEUI.

Getting VNC to work may be tricky - have a look at http://www.practicallynetworked.com or the SMC site to see what they recommend about accessing a NATted machine on the internet.

is that doable as well? Set up your router to forward the proper port to a designated internal IP address. I think VNC uses TCP port 5800 but I'm not 100% sure.

I think my problem is that the SMC has it's own dhcp server and firewall - so, how can I get to a machine behind the smc from the comp in my living room?

This may be a stupid question, but why are all the computers not behind the SMC?

I've got the SMC7004ABR and several computers networked through it. The two computers running WinXP couldn't see each other. I looked through all the options on the router, but that didn't help. It turned out to be ICF (Internet Connection Firewall). If this is running on either machine, you won't be able to share files (or printers). I couldn't even ping between the two machines. I'm glad that this was all that the problem was.
