If you have a 5.1 surround sound system and you add an extra subwoofer, is it then a 5.2 system?

My system has 2 sub outputs, so i would get more bass from adding a second sub right?\

That is more or less what I was thinking, I am using the Creative Cambridge Soundworks DTT3550 Digital speakers and decoder/amp thing. I was wondering about this because of the extra sub output jack on the back.

Some of the higher receivers with THX 2 certification has 2 sub outs. But it is still only a single discrete channel. Just for connecting 2 subs for bigger sized rooms.

tsk tsk. no need for two subs. just get yourselves one of these (or the better one which is much more expensive than this one):

The MX-350THX amplifier is the first to use M&K's Balanced Push-Pull Dual Drive Amplifier, which incorporates our latest Headroom Maximizer IV circuit. Delivering 350 watts, this innovative amplifier gives you extremely clean sound and extraordinary articulation, along with enormous output and an incredible dynamic range.

It's pretty damn sweet and probably has the best bass I have ever heard. you just have to be careful, the magnetic sheilding came off twice. but M&K is good about replacing those things.

I remember the first movie i watched with it was top gun. it felt like the jets were in the room.

I actually used to have that same set of speakers, since then i've decided to switch to a 2 piece instead, the jack you currently hook up the sub to is amplified, the sub output is unamplified and can be used to hook up one of those home theatre subs that have their own amp. So basically it's a 5.1 system giving you a choice of the packaged sub or your own personal one. It's a nice system already, so don't worry about that second output.

there is no such thing as 5.2. you would need 5 main channels (front, right and left front and right and left rear) and 2 separate subwoofer channels (something like left and right or front and rear sub channels). if you put 2 subs, you would probably want matching subs, or the sound might not match up properly. also you also need to ask yourself if you need more bass. you might not. im my room there are lots of obstructions so it sounds like there is only bass coming from the left side of my room. i wish i could put another sub im my room.
