From NWCN.com (http://www.nwcn.com/topstory/NW_041902ETBstaley.9adccab.html):

SEATTLE – The lead singer to the Seattle-based grunge rock band Alice in Chains died Friday afternoon.

Kirkland, Wash. native Layne Staley was 34.

A King County medical examiner's investigator said his office collected a body from the address in the 4500 block of 8th Ave. N.E. Friday night and planned an autopsy Saturday. The Medical Examiners office refused to confirm the identity of the deceased.

Alice in Chains was forced to cancel a 1994 tour after Staley admitted his battle with heroin addiction.
Unofficial reports suggested that Staley died of a drug overdose.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that the person had been dead for several days.

Alice in Chains was one of a handful of grunge rock bands that became a national sensation by bridging the gap between hard rock and alternative music.

In addition to its minimalist, hard-driving music, heroin was also part of the grunge scene.

Alice in Chains was forced to cancel a 1994 tour after Staley admitted his battle with heroin, a drug that had taken a toll on other Seattle musicians, including Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain.

Cobain’s own struggle with heroin was well known long before he committed suicide in 1994.

Just three months later, Hole bassist Kristen Pfafff’s body was found in the bathtub of her Seattle apartment. She too had died of an overdose.

Apparently Seattle, rock stars, and heroin are a bad combination. :(

That guy Thor Heyerdahl also died, he was the guy who built and sailed on the Kon Tiki raft back in the 50's from Peru to the Polynesian islands, that's about the same distance from chicago to moscow.

When will these people learn. Having money and being in a rock band does not mean you HAVE to do drugs. This is sad, and I really like Alice In Chains, but it is also stupid. :disa:

What a shame. Alice in Chains was one of my favorite bands - I think "Man in the Box" was the first song I ever heard from them. That and I think "Would" was probably my favorite. Real 'edgy' band with a completely different sound at the time...:(

Sadly, people think this is the way to live when you're a rich and famous rock star.

I was a pretty big "Facelift" and "Dirt" fan... didn't really like the later few albums. Great Artist... so depressed...

i think a lot of these people had the drug problem long before they became rich and famous rock stars.

the money and the fame exacerbate many of the problems, but i think layne staley was addicted before alice in chains ever "made it".

it's sad.....of seattle's "big four" alternative/grunge bands (nirvana, soundgarden, AIC, pearl jam), three of them were ruined due to heroin. obviously, kurt cobain and nirvana, layne staley of AIC, and i belive soundgarden broke up (or at least was greatly disrupted prior to breaking up) due to chris cornell's heroin addictions (i think he's clean now though). and of course, the lead singer of mother love bone, one of the pioneers of alternative music, died of a heroin OD back in like 1990. for whatever reason, heroin was a major part of the seattle music scene, and it has obviously taken a heavy toll. it's sad :(
