I did an experiment and hooked up my old crt to the VGA port on the back of my dell inspiron 8100. Look at this: http://scatcat.fhsu.edu/~becarlson/dualmonitor/config/

Cool eh ?

Oh and if you already have a dual monitor setup be sure to install UltraMon (http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/), which allows you to have a taskbar on the second monitor. And my dual monitor wallpaper page is at http://scatcat.fhsu.edu/~becarlson/dualmonitor/ if you missed it before.

i also have the same setup (one laptop and one crt as dual monitors) but i have a problem. my laptop is at 1024 but the crt is at 1600, so whenever i put up a wallpaper, the wallpaper fits fine for my laptop, but does not stretch out for my crt. is there a special way for me to fix that? should i just restart my comp? or is there no way of fixing it at all?

You should install a program called ultramon, there is an option in there that allows independant backgrounds for different monitors.

Get it here: http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/download.asp

What application would require dual monitors? Video Editing?

All of them. ;) It is just one of those things that you always think is unnecessary, and it is, but when you use it, it makes the whole experience that much better. The best comparison I can think of is a remote control for your stereo. Nobody really needs it but once you get used to it you'll never want to go back. Try it out.

how big is that monitor? my LCD is a 15" and only fits 1024x768. my 19" CRT will probably run at 1280x1024. 1600x1200 just kills me. :P

The CRT is 21" but at 1600x1200 the geforce2GO in my laptop wont display the image correctly so I bumped it down to 1280x1024 and it works perfectly.
