SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian police arrested five people who defiantly puffed away in public on what they claimed was the country's biggest marijuana joint, but it turned out to be nothing more than tobacco and harmless legal herbs.
The 36-inch so-called "community joint" -- rolled using brown paper as wrapping -- was part of a chaotic demonstration in Darwin Saturday by the Network Against Prohibition (NAP) against a planned tightening of drug laws.

"We didn't want to come in with half a kilo of marijuana, it was a symbol," said NAP spokesman Scott White.

Police said some of those involved in the stunt would face charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, while one man could face a charge of actual possession.

The NAP wants the government to accept marijuana as an integral part of Northern Territory lifestyle but the tighter legislation against those suspected of dealing is due to come into force next month.

I believe it's legal in all of the Netherlands. Something about it being legal to possess and use, but illegal to sell? Go figure. Anway, what ever laws they DO have over there aren't enforced.

I think it should be legalized over here. I've never smoked pot and I wouldn't start if it was legal, it doesn't appeal to me. I'd never date a woman who smokes. But I do think that people should be able to smoke if they want to. There are much better things that law enforcement should spend their time doing. It's ridiculous to bust people for smoking joint or having a bag of something on them. I say leave people the hell alone as long as they're not bothering anyone else.

You know, Pot is almost legal in California, if you're busted with under an ounce on you you get a ticket for 100 bucks...but it goes on your recond and when you apply for that icy Sys Admin job woops!

Also, if you are caught growing, as long as it isn't proven that you have been dealing you can usually take a drug class and get the charges dropped...we are pretty damn close to decriminalization in this state
