I’m looking for a good (peer2peer) FTP program to use in my home network.
I want to share files via the IP address only, because in my weird switch-acting-like-a-router-connected-to-a-cable-modem network, the computers each have individual IP address, but can’t see each other in the usual “search for computers/network neighborhood” way.
Ideas?

WS_FTP Server is not free, and I thought cute FTP was a client only...? Am I mistaken?
have you tried physically mapping to the drives instead of just looking through the "Computers Near Me" in Network Neighborhood?

There's nowhere to start. The computer is nowhere to found on the network. I don't know how to map a network drive with IP address only.

Use Serv-U FTP server. WS is the client I use and Serv-U is the server I use.
[edit] This company is out of business. lol, sorry about that.
I can't remember if its free or not. Maybe that is or isnt a problem for you.

I think Servu was the FTP server prog that I used in college years ago. I'll see if I can dig up a copy somewhere.

Couple of suggestions:
1 - for FTP, (assuming you're using W2K, NT or XP) use IIS for the server. It's free (comes with the OS). Use WS_FTP for the client ( http://www.ipswitch.com ) - FTP_LE is free.
2 - If you want to fix your problem of seeing the other machines in your network - you can either turn on the netBEUI protocol on every machine, or, since you can already see them by IP address, add their names in the HOSTS file. On NT/W2K/XP systems, HOSTS is normally located in C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc. Just edit this file & at the end of the file enter:
<ip address>(tab)<machine name>
for all the machines on your network. Save the file & you should immediately be able to ping by name.

...installing netbeui allowed the comps to see each others.
